i check prices for essential commodities like grains, pulses, bread, butter, vegetables, fruits every month. some of the things i look for is which brand is offering for a lesser price, offering discount. i also look for useful gifts given for bulk purchases, free gifts given in big stores and malls. down economy and financial crisis has zoomed essential goods prices too. this has created more tight money and people have become very selective in their routine purchases too. i feel noting down prices is a good way of maintaining your monthly budget. this can be easily done by noting down purchases as a list in a diary / notepad instead of some paper. do this for your every month purchases. just look back for prices of 1 kilo potatoes, i gallon of milk, 1 kg lentils, 1kg of oil, 1kg wheat flour or a bunch of banana. just make it a habit. At the end of the year you will save some extra money. how many of you check rates of your commodities regularly.

Hello mtata....well you have given a good suggestion, but it seems like a herculean task to me....That is to note down the price of every commodity I buy and comparing it and all that..Actually I do all the shopping at home, and every month just note how much has been spent on provisions, petrol, electricity, eating out etc,and try to cut unneccesary costs.. And I feel checking the price of every essential food items I buy is a total waste of time.....For there is always one way the prices go,and that is UP only.........So I always buy only the essential items in the department store and try to avoid items being given at a discount,if it is not included in my shopping list....Beacuse that will ultimaltely be additional expenditure too......,even though I may be getting it for a discount....

if not for all essential items price checking for your regular monthly items, items which you buy in large quantities or buy many times a month can be done easily. i have the habit of listing all my groceries required in a seperate notebook on 1st of every month. say for example i have to buy 25 kg or rice, 5 kg of wheat flour, 3 litres of cooking oil, 5 kg of l lentils every month. i note down. I will then go to my regular departmental store. There for my items first i will check the quality and then for the same quantity i will look for the various brands or varieties that least priced for best quality. if quality is not met i won't buy the product even if it is offered at a discount. good luck.

Hello mtata, yes I do note the price of essential commodities, and tyr to stick to the right price band.Only thing is I dont write the down price of each thing....I am too lazy for that. But I always go for good bargains, and try not to compromise on quality for the sake of saving a few pennies...

buying at super market is more beneficial as the items have quality rather than the loose buy markets as well as you may get some discount too. So i do 95% of my grocery shopping in supermarket.

Not only do I check prices, but I can tell people where they can get better deals for whatever they are looking for. My BF kids me a lot because I seldom buy anything that isn't on sale. It doesn't matter if it is clothing, household goods or food, I buy it on sale. It is so much fun for me to watch the final cost of my groceries drop from $65 to $30 in 30 seconds...but on the limited income I am on if I don't constantly buy stuff when it is on sale I couldn't afford anything.

yes, i do check the prices of my essentials when shopping. i also find this practice helps me save a lot. i not only compare the prices but the quantity and the quality of the product. there are times when the price is low but the quality is also low making that purchase more expensive in the long run and so, i sometimes take the more expensive one but i am sure that the quality will hold up. i also find your tip very helpful and will try that next time i shop; but i find that when you are used to buying a certain product, you would be able to remember how much it sells for. you should not also limit yourself to a certain store for your purchases. it might be tedious but scouring other places would give you the best price and thus, higher savings in the long run.
