All you road users, do you use or abuse the road?

I personally don't know how to drive, shameful I know but, until I learn to drive I have been cycling and commuting everywhere. I obey the rules of the road and cycling is excellent for your health. I know that some cyclists rush past red traffic lights when they should actually stop. I stop at the red traffic light and I sometimes become irate when other cyclists don't obey the rules of the road! Drivers don't get off scot free either! When I wait at traffic lights, I'm doing the right thing and it still seems as though drivers have got it in for you! When the light turns to green, they rev their engine and speed off leaving you choking with their exhaust fumes! I personally think that cyclists and drivers will never mix. I have nothing against drivers or cyclists personally, but when we all get out onto the road, something seems to happen deep within our minds! We start to change! Anyway, how do you feel about the road? What are your horrible experiences? Andrew

Well to be honest after my experience I feel more safer behind the wheel of a car than on a bike! I am actually a very careful and considerate driver, well I do have 6 years no claims bonus and driving is actually therapeutic for me, most people carve you up, and we live in a rush rush society that everyone has to be somewhere like five minutes ago, people get very selfish once they get behind the wheel of a car! I was out one day cycling and this car knocked me over, it didn't even stop for me!!!! I fell on my arm and it was badly bruised and I cut my knee open, I had to go to casualty which in itself wasn't a pleasant experience, it has put me off cycling for life, I could have been injured far worst than I was! Drivers do not give cyclists any extra room and they are so vulnerable!

Well I do go to the gym 5 times a week my friend! and I am more than happy to cycle at the gym, far more safer LOL! I used to cycle to my local station and put my bike on the train, travel to Herne Bay in Kent then cycle all along the coast past Margate and Ramsgate and come back via Manton airport to Herne Bay and back on the train home again, but in the Summer months naturally! That was a wonderful bike ride!

Thankfully I have never had a collision as serious as yours whilst on a bike. I wouldn't give up cycling for the world though. I am looking to work for myself, fixing computers and so forth and so I have to learn how to drive. I guess finance is an issue though so I'm hoping that I can work something out. I will probably end up driving for pleasure rather than commuting! It would be nice to hitch my bike on top of a car though and drive somewhere far out into the countryside. I still feel safe on my bike despite everything. I really hope that you can return to cycling at some point in life, you would really benefit as regards improvement of health. Good luck. Andrew

i admire if the road is very good and get very irritated if the road is bad with all the bumps and puddles. I usually have horrible experiences when i go to rural areas.

I must admit I've had very close calls as regards riding over a pothole in the road! I had to quickly take evasive action in order to remain on my bike! I do like the countryside though and I'm quite happy when I am cycling through those country lanes! Andrew

I guess what bothers me most when I am driving is this: I will have the cruise control set on the speed limit (or a couple miles per hour over), and someone will pass me. Then they will move over into my lane. After they move into my lane, they slow down. Not only do they slow down, but now they are going slower than I am going. I just don't get it. When you're on the highway you should be more considerate than ever because you are going at such fast rates of speed. So if you are going to pass someone, then keep going faster than them. If you're going to slow down, then just get behind them in the first place. LOL Thanks for giving me this opportunity to vent my opinion about abuse on the road. Have a great day!

Hi there, thankfully I have not had any experiences like that as I don't know how to drive! I'm sure that your experience is just waiting to grab hold of me once I eventually get behind the wheel. Thanks for your thoughts. Andrew

I have only been driving my car for a couple of years and I like to think that I use the roads well and do not abuse the road

I guess I would feel safe with you driving then! It's amazing! You sound really calm and relaxed when it comes to driving on the road! I hope that I can learn to become a good driver at some point in the near future. Andrew

I am really looking forward to getting behind the wheel eventually! I may even go for a very long drive up to Scotland, about nine hours drive from where I am! Andrew
