Windows Vista vs Windows XP

Nowadays, I'm quite poor but that doesn't stop me from browsing the countless laptop models available on the market. From that cool Sony Vaio to the affordable Dell Studio, there are just so many nice laptop models with good price and good hardware for me to choose from. And yeah, I am (or used to, before the recession) looking for a laptop. But one thing hits me hard, I'm going to use Windows Vista. I'm from the IT industry and I know how bad is Windows Vista but if you try to notice, nearly all the laptops (except MAC) are preloaded with Vista. What's your opinion on this? Will you actually reinstall Windows XP yourselves on the new laptops or are you okay to stick with Vista?

well, i was using windows xp for quite a long time... i always have a intention to turn to vista but many people said its not good to use it until service pack 1 comes... so i waited for it... now i'm using vista and it's very nice OS with new array of graphics and new design of GUI... i'm recommend you to turn to vista but if you think you can't take it, just be on xp... it's up to you...

The graphics is nice but it's not really practical right?

It's nice, but it's not practical since it takes up too much memory. Try running few other heavy duty applications such as MS WORD and OUTLOOK, and maybe even a Virtual PC. You'll know what I mean. :)

I bought a laptop with Vista recently, after testing Vista a while I decided to never go back to XP. I love it. Don't really know why. XP is faster and more easy to handle, but for some strange reason I am hooked on Vista :D

I agree marmed. I have been using Vista on my laptop for more than a year and I love it. When I use my XP machine it feels so old, kind of like when I used to go back to Win98. I use it everyday and have had no issues at all.

I think it really depends on how heavy a user you are. Based on some of the articles I've read, the performance will drop pretty drastically if you are running few heavy duty applications. For a normal Windows user, you won't encounter such problem but for a hardcore user, it IS a problem.

Wait till your laptop becomes slow due to the memory low problem :D

I have to disagree with everyone so far. I use both operating systems; Vista on my laptop and XP on my desktop. I love Vista. It works very well. I have not ever been infected with spy ware or viruses on it. I don't do any gaming so I can't speak to that but before I upgraded to Vista I made sure that I uninstalled any incompatible software. I think that is the biggest problem home users have. They try and run older software on it and it doesn't work. I have had absolutely no problems with it and I love the interface. Unfortunately Windows 7 is just around the corner and I will probably be upgrading again.

Define failure. If you mean commercially, then yes, it did not have the commercial appeal that they had hoped. I blame that on their marketing department. They assumed that they would have the level of acceptance that they had in previous releases. They did not factor in the fact that Mac was so popularly successful and would attack their image nor did they factor in the appeal of the new Linux distros. It was a marketing problem. Those that have complimented it properly have had few problems since the SP-1 release. Those that took the time to make sure that their software was compatible and their drivers were updated had few problems. In my office, I have the only Vista laptop. Everyone else has XP Pro. They are constantly asking me to do things that their systems can't do as efficiently.

You must be a very big Windows fan. In terms of marketing, I think they're doing pretty well by forcing the main distributors to sell Vista - by stopping the Windows XP production. Things which can be done on Vista but not on XP? Any example?

I prefer Windows Vista because Windows Vista is the Best OS launched by MSN.

May I ask where did you get that "best OS launched by MS"?

You can get a laptop with a preloaded vista, then re-install with an XP packet? Well, Vista sure does have its flaws, but I guess with a few tweaks and tricks i get used to it :P Or Maybe you can get a MAC instead. One way I've thought of trying but haven't tried, is to see if you can request an XP preload when purchasing your laptop. I don't know if it will cost you extra, or will they even agree to that. Good luck and happy myLotting! :D

I will try to request them to preload with XP since I really have no confidence with Vista. LOL. My friend is using it, and it's giving him a lot of headache.

LOL, I'm always one who is willing to accept new things but the feedback from my fellow techie friends are quite negative. All of them claimed (even one from Microsoft) Vista drains the memory too much that being a techie, it's quite bad for us to do work efficiently.

Windows XP - Which do you prefer?
I don't like to get the new programs until they have been out a while and the bugs can be worked out of them. When I ordered my laptop was when Vista was first coming out and I had to tell them I do NOT want Vista so when I got my laptop deleivered to me from Dell it had windows xp. I have some friends that like Vista and some that don't.

At that time, you can still choose Vista or XP. But now, it's all about VISTA.

If you have buying this laptop (VISTA OS)... i prefer you just carry on using windows vista until you computer have windows problem. After that you will chose to reinstall windows XP (Home or Professional) or Vista. I'm also background in IT and manage computer in my office. My advise, just buy that laptop because you don't have choice.

I don't have an original Win XP software. The laptop I'm currently using belongs to my company and they didn't give me any XP disc. :D

Hi, VIsta is preloaded on quite all the actual laptop becouse of commercial agreements, but this give us a good chance: buy an used laptop, use XP on it, and get better performances that a new one with Vista installed! We should thanks Microsoft, that wanna help us to feel less the recession adopting this market strategy. ;)

I use windows xp coz my dear compy just wont work with vista. I know vista is better. but you also need intel core 2 duo with it. (its about the momory or speed if i'm not mistaken). since my desktop is an old one, windows xp is the best for it. vista just wont work. but if i'm gonna but new desktop (most probably a laptop, not another desktop, i'll use vista. Vista future will be great.

I think is better using Xp at least until Vista will be more stabil and u`ll find all programs u need for VIsta too. Anyway, If u want to get used with Vista for the future ( because we`ll have to use it anyway) u cand search on the internet for Vista Transformation Packs and u`ll have an vista interface.

No, we don't really have to use it in the future because Microsoft is already trying to come out with a new Windows. :) They, too, know that Vista is too problematic.
