Is the Atkin's Diet a good one?

Hello tehre. Lately I've been looking up some dietary plans. And the one that kinda ringed on my ear is the Atkins diet. First time I heard about it, the summary was more fat and less carbs...and I was like "WTF?!". So anyways, as I've read more about it, I've realized that the main goal is that in the beginning you need to reduce the net carb intake to about 15-20 a day, and all of it must come from good carb sources like veggies and not through processed carbs like bread and rice and stuff. Also, meat is encouraged, and egg is a staple breakfast. Cool. But this lifestyle is not for the average Filipino who eats a regular heaping plate of rice in a day. So is the Atkins Nutritional Program a good one? Who else here follow the dietary plan they have? If not, what dietary program are you into right now? Can you relay the helpful facts and tell me why it's effective? All of these require utmost discipline. So every dietary program requires my discipline. I can do this, I just need a good one. Have a good day.

My husband went on the Atkins diet a few years ago and lost three stone. It is the only diet he has been on that actually worked for him. I do not think it could be healthy really but you have to take multi-vitamins while you are on it. I would do some research further into it, but it does work for losing weight.

The Atkins diet does work if you stick to it religiously, but most people, according to statistics I've read, regain the weight when they go off the diet. It's not one that you can stay on all of your life because it's very unhealthy and even life threatening over a period of time. People with kidney or heart trouble shouldn't even try it. The reason you lose weight on it is that your body needs carbohydrates for energy and when it doesn't get them, it starts to break down its own muscle and use it instead. People on the Atkins diet generally feel tired because of this. I'm not on a diet, but the best one is to determine to eat healthy food and restrict or eliminate junk food, including soft drinks. Balance protein and carbohydrates, eat whole grains instead of over processed white flour and junk cereal. Eat lots of fresh fruit and raw vegetables, drink plenty of water and exercise. You won't lose a lot of weight in a hurry, but you will lose weight and if you keep this up, you won't regain it and you'll be healthier, too.
