Do you take your Christmas tree down before New Years day or after?

When do you take your Christmas Tree down? After New Years or before New Years. I have heard that it is bad luck both ways so I am confused. Is it bad luck to take the tree down before New Years Day or after New Years Day? I know it is just an old superstition. Does anybody know where the superstition came from and why?

Hey jane~I have not heard that it was a superstition either way! I usually take the tree down on New Years day or after it. I never take it down before. I like to keep it up as long as I can because I like to look at. I usually put it up after Thanksgiving but I don't know if I will be putting it up or not this year. I like to have a long enough time with it up because I like to sit in the living room with the light's off and the tree lit up and I just love to stare at it for hours!

Opal, Thank You for your response. I will try and put our tree up today. I don't much feel like it yet. I like the lights too. Have a wonderful day and weekend.

I always put down my Christmas Tree at any day I have time after New Year. Not because of any superstitious belief because I do not believe in it but just because I believe it is the appropriate time because all holidays are over. I still believe Christmas Tree and all Christmas decor should stay till New Year because they add glitter and joy to the celebration.

Thank you for your response, salonga. I am not really superstitious. I just like to leave the tree up, too. When the new year comes the holday lights are gone. Have a nice day.

I have no idea where that came from, my grandmother told me that it was bad luck to leave your Christmas tree up into the New Year, so I take mines down the after Christmas.

I have heard it both ways. I guess it is just an old superstition. Some of my aunts take their tree down and then the others leave it up. Each person is different. Have a nice day.

I do not know anything about that superstition. I however do not take my tree down until after my sons birthday which is on the 5th of January. He really likes having it still up for him.

We usually put down our Christmas tree at after january 6. But sometimes if I'm busy it will extend a few more days after jan 6. As we all know wwe celebrates christmas the longest time.

We normally put our Christmas tree up only a couple of days before Christmas and normally take it down a few days into the new year. We always make sure it is down by the 6th of Janury though as this is deemed unlucky and being fairly supersticious we tend to follow this trend every year. Most years we use an artificial tree so it's fairly straight forward pack up quick and stick back up in the loft until next year.

Thanks so much for your response, Metalchick. What is the superstition about Jan. 6th. I just know that we never too out tree down until New Years Day, but I do remember my mother telling me that I needed to take it down before a certain datein Jan. but I couldn't remember what the date was. Have a happy holiday season.

We leave ours up till the twelth night as a rule but it depends on what days my husband works as it is something he likes to do and I leave him to it.Mind you I don't mind they are so bright and lovely and cheer us all up , when they do come down the house looks so bare and it normally takes me ages to get used to it again.x
