can anyone help me out here?? my lab ( i have two dogs, a lab and a boxer)has this spot on his back side that he.won't.quit.scratching. he's got it all rubbed raw and it is nasty looking...does anyone have an idea how to treat this?? i don't want to have to take him to the vet, i cannot.afford.that. it's $35 just to walk in the door, not to mention anything else the vet needs to do or any meds he might give my dog. i want to treat this at home, if possible!! my hubby put some iodine on it, thinking that might help and it probably would have if it had been on there long enough, but we found him licking it off. any ideas???? thanks in advance!!

My little dog has created hot spots on herself before and it got so bad that I had to take her to the vet not too long ago. First of all, it's okay to give your dog half a benadryl, which will reduce the urge to scratch. I have also had a lot of luck using sulfodene, which can be found in the pet department of many stores (I found it at Walmart). It's advertized to treat hot spots and smells like he11, but it seems to work. Also, bathe your dog in oatmeal dog shampoo, it's gentle on the skin and don't bathe her more than once a week. Good luck.

My labrador used to have some skin problems, and the vet told us she'll definitely go and scratch the wound or lick the medicine. Perhaps you can go to the pets shop and ask if there are any medicine you can apply on your lab. Also, I've seen the vet putting a plastic cover around the dog's neck, so that the dog can't lick or scratch the wound part. Perhaps you can make a similar thing to put around his neck.
