I just finish watching a couple who lives on a dollar a day by buying in bulk and calculating the cost to prepare a meal for the two of them, eating oatmeal for breakfast which cost them about .17cent per meal. The downside to it is that they don't get to have fruit because it would go over their budget and the dinner that was shown was made with cornmeal muffins and sauce, I didn't notice any meat with the meal and they both looked pretty thin. Guess what else, they're both school teachers. I guess if I had to live on a budget that small, I'd choose to spend it on lunch every day. So, can you live on a Dollar a day?

No matter how thrift i'm going to be, I'm not sure I could live on a dollar per day, having two kids with me, it would be impossible, especially now that almost all prices goes up.

By the way... its just buggles my mind that when you say that those people were teachers or at least employed why do they have to live a dollar a day. Why save the other pennies and take for granted your own health. I would probably understand if they are homeless and jobless because there is just nothing they could do about it. I would rather save my health than save in the bank and spend it all in the hospital.

No, I don’t think this would be possible in India either. I saw your calculation and with what you say, we would have to eat at a roadside eatery, which is quite unhealthy. Home cooking cannot be done so cheaply mainly coz of the cost of gas (which is astronomical, dunno what our politicians are doing) and cooking oil and spices. End of last month, my cooking oven broke down and I could not cook anything at all for three days. We even bought tea from outside. We shifted our son to my parents and though for lunch, both hubby and me went our separate ways, dinner was together. For three nights we ate only egg tarka and roti, from the roadside eatery. One plate egg tarka was Rs. 13/- and four think rotis were Rs. 8/- so that’s Rs. 21/- So I think we could have managed on Rs. 50/- but our stomachs would have broken down. However, I have heard that sattu, which many low-income people have, is both cheap and nutritious.

The couple used example like, making PBJ sandwiches cost 75cents for lunch. So they're meals were real simple foods.

I have a friend that drinks coffee for breakfast, has no lunch and eats a one dollar tv dinner for supper each day. She is single and she has a job that they keep telling her she is full time but she only works about 25 hours a week. Most of her money goes for rent. So when whe goes to the store she buys enough of these tv dinners to last 2 weeks. Let's not talk about the fat content, the sodium and what ever else is in them that is bad for you. She would be better off buying some meat and making like Speghetti or meatloaf, that she could freeze and make other meals out of. When I cook and make enough that there is a bunch left over, I put it in ziplock bags and put it in the freezer and when she comes over I send it home with her. I guess you could live on a dollar a day, she does, but she is skin and bones. I ask her why she didn't go apply for food stamps and she said she did and they offered her $10. a month in help. WOW, what a shame when I see some in new cars and have tons of groceries on the counter and paying with food stamps. But she considers that she is getting by on her own. I guess you could live on a dollar a day if you have to, but it wouldn't be too great to do. I think these school teachers are just cheap and don't want to spend the money, oatmeal for breakfast is good for you. But you have to have milk or something on it. Muffins and sauce, come on these are teachers they make a decent living.

I'm sorry but I can't do it!!! I'm already skinny enough as is, if I were to go on this dollar a day mess, I would completely disappear. I have to eat, sorry. I would bet you that this couple was already vegetarians to begin with, that's why they were able to save money in the meat department. But I don't think the living without fruits and vegetables was a smart move. That can lower their immune system, and have them sick very fast. I know the budget is small, but it will get even smaller when there are many sick days.

If you are wise enough, and courageous enough. I am sure 2 people could live on $1.00 a day for food. First you would need a garden, and a root-cellar in which to store the vegetables and fruit over the winter. Food stores throw over ripe fruit, and stale bread out every day, and this food is still good but no one will buy it. The store would give the food away if anyone would take it. A can of beans can be purchased for half a dollar- enough for a meal for 2.There are many ways to live on the cheap you just have to be cheap enough to go for it!

India is a beautiful country too with beautiful people as well. I'm not saying it's isnt possible because the couple proved it on tv, however, they also showed what type of meals they were eating and it would sometimes be just one item like cornmeal cupcaking looking dish. However, they do have a small vegetable garden to work with. Thanks for your response.

There is no way I would be able to eat on just $1 a day, let alone feed 2 people on $1 a day! First of all, I am to picky of an eater to be able to find food cheap enough that I would like. I could maybe live on ramen noodles for a few days or so, but I would eventually get pretty bored with that. Also, I know people are trying to cut back on costs and all, but you have to spend a little bit of money on food at least to get some nutrients in your diet. Buying fresh fruit and veggies is important to make sure you're still eating the right foods. It would definitely take a lot of planning and budgeting in order to eat for that little of money per day.

My husband and I had to do that when he lost his job a while back we ate lots of rice and beans and what ever we could get from out own garden. Tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, corn, green beans, carrots, radishes, and about 15 other items we grew in our garden that year. Its a good thing it happened during the summer or else we may have lost a lot of weight.

(LOL-Summer garden and weight loss). I've learned a long time ago, when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. I think if we learned to live off the land more we could all perhaps live off a dollar a day.

well here in the uk i would certainly say no you couldnt live off $1 a day, that is like 66p here you will be lucky to get a pack of crisps and a chocolate for that prize here. but saying that you could by some cheap bread and two tins of cheap beans and have beans on toast all throught the day

A pack of crisps and a chocolate cost mostly less than RM2.00 in Malaysia. Rm2.00 about us$0.60 more or less
4 Dec 08
I have just found out how much $1 would be in my currency, based on the current exchange rate, and that is 73p. This would not really stretch too far over here, even if I was to buy in bulk. I would be able to do it, but I would need to make a lot of sacrifices to achieve it. I believe that everybody should try and lower their budget, there is so much food that gets wasted due to overspending.

It would really depend on which country you live in and the cost if living there plus of course your diet. My partner and I grow our own fruit and vegetables plus make all our own jams, preserves, sauces and chutney. We also have laying hens for eggs plus a few we rear for the dinner table every couple of months. In addition, we buy most of our food in bulk. Even with all of those factors taken into account, it does cost us more than a $1-00 a day for food. Okay we eat a very healthy diet and eat well. We do have some sort of meat (chicken, beef, lamb, pork, fish) at least once a day and that adds up I suppose. In some ways if you are not doing a physically demanding job then it probably is possible to survive on that type of diet. However I am a long distance truck driver plus when I am home I work on our small organic farmklet. My partner does that every day, so both of us need good healthy food for nourishment and to be able to function properly. The thing I am wondering though is that if this couple of teachers, surely their combined incomes would not warrant such a strict budget. Okay they might have other financial comittments but that is still not a lot of money. As for not having fruit because it would take them over their budget, that is pretty bad in my opinion. I only hope they are not teaching health and nutrition to the students at the school where they are employed.

I don't think that people should scrimp too much on food. I mean, you got to eat right to stay healthy. The one dollar a day food budget is not a good idea. You need to eat some fresh fruits and vegetables and these things cost money. Besides, what the point of depriving yourself from getting healthy food? If you must live a healthy life, you need to eat well.

Here it is quite hard to do it but I think it can be achieved. It's quite hard here especially if you're living in the city but if you know where to look for cheap food then it won't be a problem anymore.

Very hard indeed, but possible - you've seen this already. I had to live from $1 a day when I was a student, in order to be able to pay for bus, fees, books and other stuff. The only thing I could spend less, was food. So, who knows what this couple has to pay for, and they're just saving when it comes down to food.

Well I totally think that you would be able to live on a dollar a day without a doubt in my mind. The only problem that I can see with that is that living on a dollar a day eventually you are going to end up severly malnutioned (if thats a word) or even starve. So My conclusion is that yes you can live on a Dollar a day but what you really have to ask yourself is. How long can you live by living on a dollar a day for Food. If you were to ask a doctor if that was possible he would probably laugh at you and tell you that you would only live for like two months and that it would be torture probably. If I was to make an ejucated guess you could probably live around six months eatting the type of crap food that they are eatting no fruits or vegatables. Another intresting Idea is that you could live on a dollar a day for food if you had a farm which you grow/raise everything you eat on a daily basis. Techniqually you would not be spending money on food but on raising the food. those people who are trying to live off of oatmeal are just plain stupid lol. If you are that poor get a different job quit your jobs and live on welfare you woul still end up better off lol with foodstamps and going to a food bank everyonce in a while. shess noone in this day and age should be living off oatmeal and cornmeal muffins with sauce lol.
