Today is saturday thank god, but if the phone rang now and it was your work would you answer it or just ignore it. I know i wouldn't pick up the phone. My phone has caller ID and it says "Monica's Work" so i know not to pick it up. Would you go to work on your day off?

It depends on the type of job that I have. For example I don't normally work on weekends. I am not expected to call in for work on Saturdays and Sundays. However if I worked as a policeman, where working hours are unpredictable yes it would be my duty to pick up the phone and report to work. © ronaldinu 2008

What is a day off? I have always worked whenever there was work that needed to be done. I suppose it is dependent upon the type of work you do or the business you are in. Since I am in consulting and work directly with clients my work tends to be whenever and whatever my clients need. My hours are unreliable. My days are unreliable. Most of the time my clients are not in my home city or even my home state which means I travel Sunday through either Thursday or Friday. Most of the time I have an off-shore component to my project teams which means I work at least part of the evening for conference calls with my team in either India or usually the Philiphines, which means I work on average a 12 to 14 hour day. Most times I work at least part of a Saturday or Sunday. Now that I have my own consulting company rather than working for someone else my working hours are even longer as I do my own marketing, billing, accounting, taxes, plus all the client facing work. So what is a day off?

You sound like you have an interesting job, it's not so bad working when you have a job like that. Traveling and all.

Yes, most definitely. If I had nothing to do, I would gladly go to work as I would be getting paid overtime and it would also have a positive impact on my manager. Since I am a working university student, I have no formal commitments so I would definitely go in to work.

I would definitely go to work on my day off, that is if I'm really needed otherwise I would enjoy my rest day: Read, relax and socialize online. Bosses would sometimes ask us to work on our day off because they need help, I would be willing as long as it's reasonable and I'm not doing anything important.

"Do as I say, not as I do" :) For myself, if it was a call from work, I'd attend to it ASAP. But to my friends I'd tell them not to attend to it. Personally I strongly believe it depends on the nature of your work. For example, if you are working in the medical profession and you are on call.. Of course you better answer it! Then again, I think you are referring to scenario where you are not on call. It depends on who's calling. Sometimes colleagues who are new just need help. And I just can't let them get into trouble for something I can help them out with. I've been called into work before, but that's coz I'm in the IT industry. And I was on the support team, so the server had problems, and every minute costs the company dollars in revenue. So work here I come. I'm somewhat a workaholic(ie I stayed back at work until the next morning over one weekend to finish up some work which had a deadline one month away just so I can have more free time during my normal working hours.. Yes, crazy as it may sound)... I have friends though who know that their role in the company is very important, as in they are the decision makers, but they just take their job like any other job(not that I am scrutizining anyone's work), but I strongly believe that if you take up a job like for example the national sales manager, you should answer the call, for it might be related to a multi million sales which they need your adivce or help on. I think I just rambled too much. :p I would say, watch Devil Wears Prada, and put yourself in Andreas' shoes, and decide from what you think about the movie.

You right, it defenitaly has to do with what kind of job you have. And if you really like working then there is nothing wrong with working your day of.

When I worked a part time job n they would call me on my days off I would ignore them too. But right now I work a full time job and work mon-friday so I don't have 2 worry about them calling me in now. But if they call me on a Saturday to work I ignore it. We all rotate saturdays and their only 4 hr shifts. But if i'm desperate and need the money then I'll go in. It depends. Also depends if I have any plans or not.

I guess 4 hours wouldn't be to bad, a little extra money and you still have lots of time left in your day.

If I am supposed to be on call on that particular off day,of course I will not avoid and ignore the calls. But if I am not the one who need to work on that day,I will just pretend never receive that call before. Lol. However,if the pay is good,I will always consider to work on day off. Lol.

If I really had nothing planned that day,or my plans could be changed I would answer the phone. I have always been the type that goes to work whenever needed, unless I really have something else going on.

I am usually working on weekends it's seldom that I can have a weekend of during the whole month I would be lucky if I can have those days off from work, I only have days off during the weekdays. Sometimes, even I am on day off and enjoying or relaxing myself they still have to call me to cover a shift it depends if I am in a good mood then I will go but mostly I have said no once yet, it's very difficult for me to say no when I know they needed somebody for that day or night.

I really really really do hate work on day off, sometimes i just put my mobile off so no one from office bothering me. But then i miss the other important phones from family or friends. so then my trick is early before the work hour usually start i send sms to my boss who usually annoy me to work on day off. i tell him that i'm going out of town or something like play sick and weak for works. its lie of course but good reason to save extra hour in the office on a beautiful day off.

When I was younger I did not mind going into work on my day off. It meant making extra money, and It wasn't like I had a whole lot of other pressing engagements. Now I have plans for my time off. Spending it with family, running errands, and most importantly taking that much needed mental break from the job environment. So, no, they could call all they want.....not going.

It would really depend with me on a couple of things. 1. How tired I am. 2. How much I need the extra time in. In other words the money. If it came directly down to really needing the cash, yes I would answer, and go in.

I have to go into work on a few occasions to get work done, but usually I had that planned. My job actually called me today on a Saturday about a title. I was thinking this is my day off, what do you want? I went ahead and called them back. It turned out I did not do anything wrong and they could have found it without calling me. Go figure! I prefer not to be bothered when I am off though. Work has been stressful enough lately.

Hey Missybear. The answer is heck no! I don't have a job anymore but when I did have a job they called me a few times on my cell phone, but It was easy to come up with an reason why I didn't or couldn't answer the phone. I just told them the next day that someone else was using my phone because we share the same cell phone and I don't have caller ID on my phone. Hey that was then though. I work from home now, but if I give myself a day off, there's no way I'm working anyway.
