It is a good thing that we have one of those artificial Christmas trees. About a week ago, my younger son brought us a Poinsettia, so I put it on the photo table, but the leaves are now falling off, and even the red petals are dropping off. I have no idea what is going on. Is the room too hot (it is around 70 degrees F, but cannot turn it down as I had a cold, and my husband is fighting a cold as well) is it because I water it too little or too much? Is it because it is root bound? Is it because it has to be in a darkened room? I do need help. I want it to last until Christmas, but I doubt it will. Anyone know what is the matter?

Here's what I found on the net After you have made your poinsettia selection, make sure it is wrapped properly because exposure to low temperatures even for a few minutes can damage the bracts and leaves. Unwrap your poinsettia carefully and place in indirect light. Six hours of light daily is ideal. Keep the plant from touching cold windows. Keep poinsettias away from warm or cold drafts from radiators, air registers or open doors and windows. Ideally poinsettias require daytime temperatures of 60 to 70°F and night time temperatures around 55°F. High temperatures will shorten the plant’s life. Move the plant to a cooler room at night, if possible. Check the soil daily. Be sure to punch holes in foil so water can drain into a saucer. Water when soil is dry. Allow water to drain into the saucer and discard excess water. Wilted plants will tend to drop bracts sooner. http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/poinsettia/care.cfm

Mike I usually let any plant that I get die. I usually forget to water them. I now just buy the artificial poinsettia so I don't torture the poor plant.

Maybe I should put it downstairs in the basement. It is cold there as well.

Sorry to hear about your Poinsetta, I killed a couple in the past so I know how you feel. I think the cold is what affects them. They like light so give it a lot of light. I am not sure if 70 degrees is to high, good luck.

It has been quite cloudy the last few days and the curtains were pulled so that could be it.

Afraid I have no answers for you. Just understanding. LOL I used to have such a green thumb. Everything I grew thrived. But somehow my thumb must have fallen off, because I can't grow anything now. I even resorted to putting fake plants and flowers in several of my outside pots because I can't get anything to stay alive in those either. The funny thing is the only plants that seem to thrive are the ones I forget about outside. It makes me feel so rejected..... LOL

I never was good at keeping houseplants. I kill all of them. I thought this would be the exception.

A poinsettia needs at least 6 hours of indirect sunlight per day. 68 to 30 degrees is the perfect temperature for it. Water it when the soil feels dry, do not keep it moist.

If it is any consolation, you are not alone. I once tried to plant in our yard and it took the plants less than a week to finally give up the fight! lol

I don't know about the temp, but as for the soil, does it feel dry or really wet? It should be slightly damp, I water mine once a week and they go all through the winter..What I have problems with is trying to keep them from dying after that. I had instructions on how to keep a poinsettia and to get it to bloom again the following year, but by Spring, they die..:(

I'm smiling as the poinsettias outside of my office ar now in bloom and look so good. 70 degrees should be o.k. but is it getting enough light? Do not overwater. Having said that, the leaves dropping off could be either it is dying or it didn't have a root to begin with. some unscrupulous people at this time just put a branch in the soil and pray that you don't check that it has a root. Sorry, that is all I know and who knows? I coul dalso be wrong. LOL Blessings
