The Old Testament is a record of the experiences of Israel about how YHWH dealt with his people. The formation of OT came in stages. The first five books was first composed. It's debated who wrote the first five books. Traditionally Moses is believed to be the writer. The people of Israel read the these books as the Law. Then other books got added, and so on and so on. In New Testament times, the OT was used as the inspired word of God. But as the apostles wrote of the account of Jesus; and later the letters they all got compiled as one book i.e. the Bible.
