I believe it is possible to learn karate online or from a video if you 1. have a very good instructional vidoe 2. are willing to spend time on it and 3. If you focus more on karate forms in the smae way that the old masters did it. What are your thoughs on this and on other martail arts

Honestly I have never thought about it.I would see with the boom in youtube subject matter that you very well could learn martial arts from a video. It would certainly save you alot of expense, but you would not have anyone to correct your form either.

Yes you can learn them but the problem is, how will you know if you performed the right technique without a partner or someone to correct your stance? It can be useful if you are able to use the martial arts you have learn to defend yourself in everyday life.

I also agree on that. You could learn martial arts by using only the video and learning from it. It is much more effective if you gonna have a return demo after watching the video.

Personally I wouldn't recommend it. I earned a black belt in a school and they teach you a lot more than just fighting techniques. Not only that but some of the techniques are a lot harder than they look, and with instructors and fellow students you can learn how to do everything correctly. If you find a good school you even get a decent workout every class which is always a plus. I'm not saying that you can't do it from watching a video, I just wouldn't recommend it.

for me learning must be with guidance not with a video only you can't learn that very easily, base on my experience as an athlete and a martial artist it thus take hard work and constant repetition. when looking in the video with out imitation guidance of a coach you mistakes will not be corrected. and you can never perfect it.

Yes you can but the grading must be very very strict. Testings, IMHO, should be done live so that actual knowledge can be really measured. Instructions can be done live or recorded depending on the agreement of the school and student.

It may theoretically be possible, but why would you want to want to do this? Are there no classes available where you live? Martial Arts training involves repetitive training of certain techniques and combinations of moves until it becomes conditioned in you..if You have never done any training before, even the best instruction video is no substitute for a full class training environment. You could learn a technique wrongly and injure yourself..and You'll never get the feedback or encouragement on how you're advancing from a virtual teacher,or the achievement of moving up the belt grading hierarchy either!

yes you can learn moves. but the best way to learn martial arts is to apply it. have you sparring partner that are interested in martial arts too.. in that way you can train yourself. not just watching... when it comes to real situation you can't apply your tutorials watched on videos. and one thing more you have to undergo the basic exercises stretching to make your body or muscles prepared for the training. concentrate on how to strengthen your muscle and mind concentration..
