Do you meditate?

Meditation is practiced in some religions and not in others. Meditation is also practiced by non-believers of religion. Some do it to calm themselves, and some do it to get answers. I'm just starting to do it as I delve more into Taoist practices. It's not easy considering I have to still the mind in a very non-still place. Do you meditate? If you do, on what?

I meditate on my breathing. I think that's actually Zen Buddhism but I'm not so sure. I'm not doing it to follow anyone's teachings or philosophies, I do it because it's healthy and it helps me get through a day or a week with a smile on my face and with peace in my mind. Thanks for the response on my discussion!

that's the "free you mind" thing, isn't it? So can you...bend a spoon? I heard that there are actually real people who can do it and the very first step is to "think about nothing"...but how can I think about nothing? Just thinking about it is already thinking about something!

Bending a spoon is more matrix than meditation. I'm not sure though. Maybe some people do and can bend spoons with their minds. Stilling the mind is a challenge. I find it difficult myself especially in my place where everything is just too loud. Another challenge is actually not falling asleep while meditating!

Thanks too for responding. Yeah. I've also heard of zen buddhist practices. The taoist way of meditating is to focus on actually stilling the mind. Focusing on breathing is okay for beginners but eventually the focus (or lack of it) must be shifted to actually getting rid of any thoughts in your head since focusing on breathing would distract the mind since you're actually thinking about how you're breathing and once the mind is still you become open to the universe. I'm still a Christian though. What I like about taoist philosophy is their emphasis on being one with yourself, others, and the universe. Fascinating stuff. Have a good one.

I try to meditate to calm myself and to get in contact with my innerself. Sometimes you get so rushed and stressed by everything in your life that it can be good to take a step back and listen to your own body. It can really help straighten yourself out and have a clear view again.

I do meditate. I try to do it at least once a day. I took some Qi Gong classes to help me with meditation. I also watch meditation techniques on DVD's....

My religion is Hinduism and in it meditation is included though not essentially practiced by everyone.I do meditate. But I was not regular in doing it. Now i have started again and it gives control over mind and helps in reducing tensions and increases concentration. Meditation for students is much beneficial for their studies and for grown ups it gives peace of mind which is so dear in present world. Now there has been increasing consciousness about it and I find it good for all. Happy new year..

Cool. I can actually understand why you did not meditate regularly. In my experience, well I'm a beginner unlike you, meditation actually takes a lot of discipline. At first I thought it was going to be very easy but once I started doing it, it actually takes some work. Goodluck on your meditation and happy new year to you too.

Meditation is a very powerful medium to reach god.The followers of Sanatan Dharma(Hindus) had long ago discovered this.Everything is in the mind, our mind keeps on doing its job even when we are asleep. The subconscious mind never sleeps. In my opinion prayers are just a means to keep our mind focussed on one thing and its a sort of meditation.I may be wrong as am not an expert but this is the way i interpret.
