Attention Deficit Disorder

About two years ago, I took my friend who had been diagnosed with ADD to an ADD group session. By the end of the session, I had a sneaky suspicion that I might also have ADD because I could relate to most of what they were discussing. I did some Internet research and my suspicion was kind of confirmed. But I'm still not ready to accept that label of "ADD" because there is a lot of stigma that comes with it. I found out that there is an on-going debate of whether even ADD is a real condition. So does ADD exist or is it something that "ADD-ers" use as an excuse?

No, ADD and ADHD really do exist and I have watched three of my four children deal with this disorder for over 30 years. One of my daughters has ADHD and she had a very hard time when she was a child but is doing well now because she lives her life in a way that compliments her condition. Her job requires energy and so does her life so, since she's always in high gear, she's happy. There was a time when she was in school that I had to medicate her and the medication worked well but the stigma of being ADHD was too much for her as she entered middle school and she refused to take the medication any longer. I have also detected some ADD symptoms in myself but I don't consider it to be anything to worry about. I like to do two or three things at once so the computer has thrilled me! As long as you're not having problems at work or school and can finish what you start, you sholdn't worry about it too much either but definitely learn about it.

Hi spalladino! One of my problems is that I find it difficult to finish what I started. And if that thing is of no interest to me, for example housework, then it becomes REALLY difficult to even start it lol! I have a million unfinished projects all over the house and a million more ideas swimming in my head. But I guess my problem kind of works in my favour - I'm a writer :-)

Just to be sure, i guess you have to seek the help of a psychiatrist. They are the ones who can tell whether or not you have the said disorder. I don't think people with ADD have a bad social stigma to them. Disorders, when treated properly could be corrected.
