Where can you find a police scanner?

I got a police scanner as a Christmas present but I could not use it. Before I opened it I looked up how to use it online and I went to radio shack to figure out how to work it and they told me that the police scanners did not work because police had a private channel and it was "illegal" to listen into the police radio. Was it was just the individual scanner or are all scanners forbidden from listening in on police radio. Where can I find a working police scanner for my personal use (if there are any) and is it illegal or legal?

First let me say your name here is hysterical. I have a Radio Shack scanner that works fine. It's a 200 channel direct entry. It's called a programmable scanner. I doubt it's against the law or these wouldn't be sold unless times have changed and this particular scanner is no longer available. Have had it for a few years and I do hear calls that go out. I can't actually hear the calls placed from a home to the police or vice versa but do know if there is an accident in the area or if a resident or place of business is being robbed. I get the news before the local news on tv can report it to the public. I also know if there is a fire going on and what exact area. I love to listen to it.

Thanks for the compliment. But which police scanner did you get? Because I searched radio shack's site recently to check for their radio scanners but there were around 14 different results. So which one did you buy and how much did it cost or which one is better, the walkie-talkie looking one or the car stereo looking one? Thanks!

I bought the Radio Shack, 200 channel directy entry programmable scanner. Bought this a few years ago and it was around $200.00. If they still sell them, am sure the price increased. It's great and am really happy with it. Mine isn't a walkie talkie and is not as big as a car radio. This is the size of an old transistor radio with a long antenna. It's black in color and runs on batters or regular electricity. I prefer to keep it at home and plug in it since batteries can be so costly.
