Has anyone ever tried yerba mate? What do you think of it? In my opinion , it's a great drink. I strongly recommend it to everybody, except for young children. Of course, it contains lots of caffeine, it's even strongly than coffee. However, its taste is similar to tea. What is interesting about this drink is the way you are supposed to prepare it. There must be a special cup and you put as much as one third or even two thirds into it. Such a portion can be used as many as seven times. What is more, when you pour water into the cup, the mate gets so thick that you have to use a special straw called bombilla - it's made of metal, wood or silver and it has many small holes on one side to block the leaves and only liquid gets through. As I said, its taste is similar to tea but it is a lot more bitter. I like it a lot - it gives a lot of energy, sometimes you mey even feel a sort of euphoria. I've heard that it's very popular in South America, especially in Paraguay and Argentina.

I enjoy yerba mate but have never made it that way. I just steep it in boiling water for 10 minutes or so. It gives me a lift without too much caffeine.

Some years ago I went to Argentina and of course I tried yerba mate. People drink it in two ways, mate dulce (sweet mate) and mate amargo (bitter mate). Each one has its supporters. I tried both and liked better the sweet one. Nonetheless, I'm affraid I haven't drunk it again ever since that trip. i wonder why...
