I just lost my job because of the economy-how is your economy?

I live in the state of Ohio in the United States, a very depressed area even before our economy took a nosedive. I got a temporary job with a construction company and it lasted for three months before they said they had to let me go this past Friday. I was disappointed, I really liked the people there but I understand their situation. They had already laid off some construction workers and were starting to cut office staff. How is the economy where you live? Have people lost their jobs because of it or is it just a mild inconvenience? I hope it's the latter for many of you! I'm cutting back on everything. I already live frugally but I need to find other ways to save money!

It is not bad in Canada yet. But we depend on the States for some of our imported goods and it might be with our dollar going low, that things will cost more. Our interest rate has gone down, so even though we are pensioners, we cannot find the bargains we used to. Now we have always been cheapskates and it has cost us something. So I have to put more of my money in the bank and spend less even on the necessities. We did turn our thermostat down to 15 degrees C and found that we are coughing more frequently, my husband is fighting more colds and it affects his arthritis. I would say if we have to be more frugal, it is more than an inconvenience, it will become a hardship.

I am terrible at article writing. Maybe I should write an article such as "how to deal with a husband who thinks he knows everything!" but with me writing my novel, it will be a while until I get cash for it. It's amazing how much work needs to be done. Good luck on your articles, you are probably better at them then I would ever be.

Maybe turning down your thermostat is false economy, your health is very important to your enjoyment of life. I hope things get better soon. Oh, there are endless things to write about!! I'm working on something now for a bunch of blogs and they are little more than nonsense--I just have to write about how to make your blog attractive to people, one I have to write about how to get your girlfriend/boyfriend back (and me a divorced woman! ha!) and I'm actually making money doing this stuff. Not as much as with a regular job but it certainly does pay some bills!

As far as I know it's not too great where I am at either dragon. At one point my husband told me that his boss said that if the economy doesn't get better within the next year he's going to quit his business (ironically enough it's a construction company). That was a month or so ago. I hope that doesn't happen, but with some of these homes being built they have already been sold to the banks. How scary is that? However, things are looking up, sort of. My husband is due to go to Reno in the next few days as there is some work over there. Neither of us want him to go, but it's his job and we could use the money. Gotta eat and pay the bills, after all.

Thanks dragon. He's going to be leaving in a few hours. But by what he told me he'll be coming back later in the day. I don't know how he's going to do that though with so much driving plus working. The job in Reno is supposed to last for a month. Though, who knows how long it'll really last. Oh, I hope it doesn't get as bad as that. That's the last thing anyone needs.

I used to hate it when my husband had to travel and be away for weeks, so I know how you feel. But hopefully, it won't be for long. This is a weird thing, I don't remember the economy ever being this bad but my Mom, who remembers the depression, says to prepare for the worst-it was just like this before that terrible time.

Hi dragon54u, I must admit that I do have a stable job since I am employed as a teacher with the Government. But my wife who works for the banking sector does not have a stable job and we are keeping our fingers crossed that we don't get hit by the credit crunch. Eventually it will hit my country as well. I hope that we will be hit mildly if possible. (c) ronaldinu 2009 - the more people I meet-the more I love my dog

I think good teachers will always be needed, you have a good profession! I hope your wife is able to keep her job, it's nearly always a major problem when two incomes are reduced to one. I hope you've been able to stay fairly debt free, that will help a lot. Good luck to you and your family!

It's about the same everywhere. I think I've worked about a day & a half in the last 2 weeks. It doesn't look like it will improve any time soon.

I still have my job.....hopefully for as long as I need it. My wife was a victim of the last wave of lay-offs. We kind of knew it was coming, so we had already discussed how we needed to go about making adjustments to our budget and expenditures so that we souldn't have to struggle too badly.

I am sorry to hear that. I am in OH also, and my husband is struggling to keep his job. It is horrible here.

I am not in bad shape, really. I have an income that pays my mortgage and basic bills but I was trying to make some money to put toward retirement. I banked all my paychecks so I now have a small financial cushion should something happen--I had one before but had to repair my chimney and that was really expensive! I hope your husband keeps his job. Everyone says that better times are right around the corner but for a lot of people that's too far away. The Sunday paper had a total of 11 jobs in it, all for skilled professionals and especially medical. It looks pretty bleak for anyone who wants a job. Best of luck to your family!

It's bad all over thw World not just the States. Here in Minnesota there have been so many places closing up recently due to the failing economy. My wifes restaraunt has lost a lot of business as people can't afford to eat out like they used to. She still works a lo0t though as it'sd a small family owned business and theres only maybe 6 employees actually so as long as he makes money she has a job and we don't see that closing anytime soon unless he sells it. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

That's great news, I hope the restaurant continues to do well! I would love that type of work but my physical limitations won't let me do such a job. I did bank nearly all of my earnings so I'm luckier than most people who are unemployed. Good to "see" you again! I was offline for two weeks so I missed all the Christmas and holiday chatter. I peeked at your profile and see you've been quite busy! Can't wait to see the video of you two dancing! Hope there are pics of Savannah's first Christmas, that ornament is beautiful.

I am also on the verge of losing my job. With the economy conditions getting worse and worse the things would be getting worse. The recession is heading us badly and creating financial problems for people like us.

I'm surprised, I thought your country was prospering. I'm sorry the recession has spread all over the world, I wish something could stop this. We have been foolish in my country and made it worse for everyone. I hope you keep your job! Put away some food if you can for the future, do what you can to protect yourself and your family.

I don't live far away from you residing in the state of Michigan and the economy is absolute crap here too. I have a small part time job but I'm trying to find a full time job and it's darn near impossible to try and find one. The economy is going to crap and I hope that people won't lose their jobs but it's still happening.

Congress just got a $4700 raise at the beginning of the year. I've stopped being angry about the economy, stopped being discouraged and I'm just trying to survive. I'm blessed to have a small income that I can live on if I cut things to the bone but I'm 54 and trying to save for my old age. The up side is that I won't be driving in the ice and snow this winter unless I get some more temp assignments. Have you tried calling a temp agency? Would you like to try your hand at writing? I make some decent money writing on the internet and if you like I can give you the email of the guy I write for.

I am so sorry to hear about this. Seems that this has become the norm for our country. I at this time am very fortunate to still have my job. I knock on wood every day as does my husband with his job. I have discovered that even though the jobs are far and few in between there are still jobs in the food and service industry. At least that is the case where I am from in Colorado. I dont know about your area but where I am at it seems the only places that are hiring are the foodservice places, but I am not 100% sure as I have a job and dont look unless I am in need of one. I have also discovered that most places don't put the jobs they are trying to fill in the paper any more as its an expense they can live with out. Any way good luck and I hope you are able to get back to work soon or find something online to compensate with.

I'm very glad you are both employed and hope it continues! I can only work office jobs because if I'm on my feet for more than a few minutes, my scoliosis and arthritis is excruciatingly painful. So I don't have a lot of options. The good news is that I banked most of my earnings so things won't get really bad for a few months!
