Suicide from job loss.

I saw a clip on the news today that there are many young (20's and 30's) Japanese people committing suicide because of the great recession and job loss our world is facing today. America has a lot of responsibility for this and Japan greatly depends on the economics of USA. Suicide is a common activity Japanese people did from back in history and they are devout workers. But are people born just to work? Because you loose you job, does it mean your life is over? I've heard that many people in Japan dedicate their whole life for this one job. Is it 'live to work or work to live'?
