And why? If you smoke, what got you started? How did you start? Have you tried quitting?

I started because Marlboro were offering a free Zippo if you collected 20 tokens from packs. I got my Zippo and stopped. Since then I've started and stopped whenever I feel like it. :)

The funny thing is that I really never remember making a decision to try it. My best friend smoked and tried to teach me. I remember I kept inhaling wrong and she kept trying to show me how to do it right. I was never that interested. Then I ended up being around it all the time.A lot of the guys I hung out with smoked and then somehow I found myself craving a cig first thing in the morn and knew I was hooked. Wish I had never done it. Previously the thought of smoking disgusted me and I could nver understand why ppl did it. Ten yrs later and I've been smoking on and off. I've able able to quit with every pregnancy but always end up starting back. What is wrong with me. I've even quit for a couple yrs a time.THE CRAVING NEVER GOES AWAY. Right now I havn't smoked in over a week but seriously have been contemplating going to the store

I know how you feel but there are many reasons why people get addicted. One of them is peer pressure and then the nicotine just takes over. I'm just glad I don't know many people that smoke.

I started smoking 7 years ago back when I was in my junior year of high school. It was purely teen rebellion during that time. I stopped for about a year but started smoking again during my freshmen year in college. I was only a social-smoker at first but I slowly started to get addicted to the nicotine. I've been trying to quit since then. I haven't totally given it up but I sparingly light up these days.

First, sorry for such a late comment on an old discussion. But anyway, it is good to hear that you have been very close to quitting. I don't know many smokers, but those that do smoke started early and could not stop. Keep on trying and good luck on quitting!
