Is it just my imagination or is the current state of literature equivalent to junk food? Addictive, fattening, not really good for you, and leaving you craving something satisfying and nutritious? What do you guys think?

Actually... I tend to think of most of the old Classics as unsatisfying. They seem to have stories that aren't interesting, aren't enjoyable, and contain characters that I can't really care about. English teachers go crazy over these classics for some reason that I can't quite put my finger on. I can't say that I've ever found a classic to be "nutritious" either. There are very few classics that I can put down and be truly glad that I read them. On the other hand, I find a lot of current literature that suits my tastes. Maybe you've been looking at the wrong section of literature these days. There are a lot more books on the market now than ever before.
