Laid off due to economy?

Just looking to start a discussion to see how many of us have been laid off due to the failing economic conditions around the world. It seems like here in my city, there are many big companies either cutting their workforce or closing their doors altogether. My husband is on the brink of losing his job and I've heard of so many others. How many have been laid off and have you been able to find other job interviews or other work since the layoff or is it very difficult in the job market out there?

I was laid off in November due to company cutbacks and I'm not really looking for another job right now since there were few opportunities for someone with my skills in my area to start with and none available right now. I'm collecting unemployment benefits for the time being. I have registered on several online job sites so, if your husband's job isn't secure, he should update his resume and register on some of them, too. You never know, a better job might find him before he gets laid off.

I'm sorry to hear that, but it seems like it's what's happening so frequently lately. There are so few opportunities in our area as well, as we've been checking job boards for things in my husband's field. He has updated his resume and started sending to a few jobs, and he has been talking to contacts in his field hoping for some referral to a little hidden gem. He will have to collect unemployment as well if his company goes out this week. We are still waiting to see how it all turns out. Good luck to you and thank you for posting!

Where my hubby works they have been laying off since last April, the last lot of redundancies were just before christmas and today at his work it was announced that there is to be a lot more. Workers have already taken a working hour and pay cut in an attempt to ease the burden of redundancies but it is obviously not working. My hubby is taking a lorry driving course next week that his mum has paid for and he will have a job when he passes so it may be well worth him taking voluntary redundancy if it comes up at least then we will have a lump sum to keep us going. I know that we cannot keep living with redundancy threats hanging over us all the time it is awful.

It seems like when the economy was good and the companies were profitable, they hired more people than they needed to really do the work. So many people now are losing their jobs to redundancies as a result because they can't afford it anymore. It is very sad. Good luck to you and your hubby!
