Why should anyone have to put up with a landlord like I have?

Slumlord is really the appropriate term, I really think. My landlord (and incidentally my daoghter and son-in-law's also) is the type who doesn't want to fix things up. If you ask him to fix something that concerns a health hazard, he wants to raise the rent. I am on a fixed income and don't feel like I can afford to pay more. It is hard to find something to rent in nearby communities because of the tornado that tore Greensburg, Kansas up. A lot of people relocated to surrounding towns so housing is at a premium now. I spent a lot of hours working for him and his wife in an antique/whtever store to help them build business and I did it for nothing for quite awhile. Then when I even asked for 5 dollars a day because I can make more than that online and couldn't do it if I was there, it seemed like he was kind of booty hurt. I need your opinions on this just to get a feel for the way you react. I try to help people and sometimes I hurt myself by helping them. Thanks all of you.

Well I hate to see that because we have rent houses and I like to keep them clean and in good living conditions. We never know who will move in with children and I believe they deserve the best. However if they get in there tearing it up I charge. I feel that they should be considerate of my property even though they are paying rent. I hate to hear you have a slum lord. You sound like a good renter. I like people on fixed income because they usually stay for long periods of time. I try to take care of them within means of course. Maybe you should try to find another place with a land lord that cares. He can find someone else to rent your house. Unless your just partial to it. Good Luck!

Thank you for your post. I know there are some very good landlords out there. An ex-manfiend of mine is one of them but he is in another state and as my only child lives in this state and my grandchildren and my two greatgrandkids so I want to be close to them. They are really the reason I live and all I really have (outside of nieces, nephews, a sister and 3 brothers.)

Hi there Nana I must be very lucky with my Landlord as him and his Wife are great Ok, he can not raise the rent every time something needs fixing he as a Property Owner should have insurance for that sort of thing Now I know I am in the UK but from what I understand from my Landlord, he has to keep the Place safe Condition because if it is not and you get Hurt through it you can sue him, he also should have certificates on certain things that he has serviced like Gas and that and that the Flat/House is livable and safe for you He can not raise the rent every time he has to fix something as it is part of responsibility to make sure that his Tenants are safe If I where you I would look into things further and as for him not willing to pay you that little bit of Money well I think you need to say no to helping I am like you most the time when I help People I hurt myself but I am starting to learn I have to say though that does not go for when helping my Friends as they are all wonderful I really hope you can get this mess sorted Hugs to you Please let me know the out come of it all

Personally I agree that there needs to be a Ruling against people renting out places like this. Especially when it is to people on a Fixed income for sure. I would check with your Local agencies there, and see if there is not something that needs to be done, as this does not seem right for sure. But everywhere you turn anymore it seems like people never want to fix anything up. At least you Rent and not own. We own a Condo and have many issues ourselves here which we cannot fix up and the Condo association does not really care.

This one sounds like a real freaking piece of work. YARG! I don't know how you put up with it. Isn't there some sort of contract or law or something around there, that states that health risks should be taken care of at no cost to the renter? Up here they woudln't be allowed to just raise the rent because something went "wrong."

I know what you mean by slumlords. I have one of those where I live. I understand that I am paying less rent than most people in the town that I live in. But we have had such problems like our fridge broke and it took him 2 weeks to get us a new one and I had a baby in the house at the time. Our furnace broke in the middle of winter and again 2 weeks later it was fixed. Our foundation is sinking. Those are just a few things. But if we complain then he will find a way to kick us out and we are on disibility and can not afford anything else. Oh yea and our landlord is an attorney so he knows all the loop holes.
