The school called...

My son's school just called to let us know that there will be no school again tomorrow because of the cold weather we are having but they didn't just call, they also email me and called me on my cell phone. They make it very easy for us to find out any school news. For example if a student misses a class or is absent for the day, or to remind us that there is a late start day or to let us know about report cards... Do you get these calls from your childs school or do you remember the school calling your parents?

When my children where in school we did not have that kind of a system set up. We would get the foggy day schedule called to the house but no where else. This was pre cell phones.

I bet it is. I bet it is all computerized and someone does not have to actually have to dial the number.

Hi there Ourdew! That is really great! I hope that there will be schools like that here in our place. My son's school doesn't do that although we don't have much problem with it because their school is right across our house. Our school which is a thirty-minute ride away from our house doesn't do that before either. Now they promise to start doing that but we haven't tested it yet.

Only time school called home when my kids were in school were when they were absent to make sure they were home sick and not skipping school :) With automated systems in these days and time, it is a good policy to put into force. I know the university uses the automated phone call and email system here for emergencies and I think it is a good thing for all public schools from pre-school to university levels to use. Great resource for parents too to stay in the loop!

well, firstly, they dont cancel school just because it is cold out! heck, this is canada after all and we are a tough bunch! (the kids do have indoor recesses though.) secondly, i live in a pretty big city, so if they are planning to cancel school for a snow day, they usually let the local radio stations and the local tv station know (they cancel it as of 6 am since they cannot send kids home through the day.)

They don't close the schools that often. It's -20 degrees here right now. Too cold for us. I don't know how you guys handle this in Canada.

I don't remember my school doing this. When I was in school, if you don't call the school ahead of time if there is a weather issue, then you will not know if you have classes or not. It is a good thing that schools have better means to communicate with parents now. I bet it's very much appreciated.

We have to listen to the radio to know if school is being called off or not.

Our school calls when there is going to be a closing or afternoon activities will be canceled too. Although we haven't missed many days because of this cold bitter weather, they don't call off unless they really have too. However since my one child is a walker I have kept him home because of the weather. I don't care how close we are almost a mile is to far to walk in this stuff! When I was in school we had to get up and watch our local news for closings. I didn't like it cause then I was already up and running so I couldn't go back to sleep. Now if I get the call I can let them sleep in until 8 or so.

They closed the school here two days in a row but it was really cold. One day it was -17 in the morning without the windchill. Brrrrr

Way back in gradeschool, we don't have that kind of technology but because we live near the school it is easy to monitor the students. Some of the schools here now in our country update parents thru mail also.

Wow we don't get calls like that at all and we are only a small school of a few hundred. The most the school board does is make it posted on the radio station and website. And usually they post it so late that we are usually all dressed and ready to go before we see the notice. There have been times that they went in just to find out it was canceled. Though I wouldn't want to get bombarded with many calls from the school about this, I would have appreciated it when we all tracked our way in there. LOL

I like the idea of not having to get up and ready before finding out. The school calls early, so I can tell me son before he gets up to take his shower.

Our school just started this this year and I love it. It is a recording that calls you and tells you they are delayed, closed, ballgames is cancelled, report cards are coming home, progress reports are out and so forth. I think it is great. Ours in Ohio was closed today too. They called last night to let us know. We've reached a big whopping 4 degrees today! LOL

My son is in daycare and they do that. It sometimes gets annoying though. If they don't reach me on my cell they will call my work. It disturbs others cause i have to go to someone elses phone. My office phone doesn't work.

I believe it is the school's responsibility to be able to connect with parents. I did receive this calls from school from time to time when I was in Illinois but not here in New Jersey. Anyway, we can go check school information on tv since they have exclusive channel or we can also check it in the school's website. Any way we have ways of getting informed.;-)

WOW! That is great!!! We never get calls from the school here unless the child has been hurt or is ill at school and needs attention or to be picked up! Or if there is outright bad behavior that warrants a suspension from school! Thankfully the school has only called twice in the last two years and that was because our son had become ill at school and needed picking up! Here, they send notes home and calendars as to PA Days etc and to inform us of concerts and other special events throughout any given month.... The schools never close here due to cold weather or a snow storm either...the only thing that happens is that buses cancel with storms for those who are bused! Otherwise those that walk (like my son) still go to school on those days! They just have indoor recesses on days like that! I wish we did get more informed about things going on at school! If I want to know something about my son I have to write the teacher a note and wait for her response...Rarely initiated on the part of the teacher or school! This years Christmas concert note was sent home two days prior to the actual concert...I would have appreciated more notice than this so that Grandparents could have went! You are truly lucky to be as informed as you are! ~Heavens~

My son used to be able to get his homework assignments over the net, when he missed a day at school, but very seldom did the school call.. Every parent was expected to access the internet and then take care to make sure the child did the proper homework..

Hey ourdew... my sons school called only in the first month as reminders, but now they dont call...I think they did it just so that parents got back into the swing of the new year. Now we dont get them anymore. Wow, they dont have school due to the weather, we also are having very cold weather here in Michigan, I hope my son has school tomorrow since his class is having a party tomorrow.
