they don't have any legs. they don't have any arms. they don't have any eyes. they don't have any ears. they don't even have throats to swallow with. they don't have vocal cords. they don't have tv. they don't have computers. they don't have shopping malls. they don't have fast food. they don't have tupperware. they don't have parties. they don't eat chocolate. so, can someone please tell me.....WHAT ARE CLAMS SO HAPPY ABOUT?!?!? why do people say "happy as a clam"??? are us non-clams missing out on something???

You know, I'm betting they're happy because they DON'T have to worry about any of that stuff! No 'keeping up with the clamses', no worries about seeing or hearing anything horrible ... no worries about chocolate making them obese or their computer deleting their half-written novel at the eleventh hour ... and most importantly of all, definitely no worries about where the damn Tupperware lids have disappeared to! Being a clam is GREAT. In fact, being a clam is probably a wonderful, stress-free existence. Maybe we should all come back as clams ... you can't go past all that delightful, clammy goodness ...

yeah, them tupperware lids are a real pain in the butt to keep together. and don't get me started on the spaghetti sauce stains. i like eating CLAM CHOWDER from a tupperware bowl while writing on my computer, followed by some nice chocolate.

I was wrong, then - clams obviously have EVERYTHING to fear from Tupperware ... even though they don't know it! Hahahaha!

Actually clams are just a freshwater version of oysters & can also make pearls. They're just usually of a slightly lower quality.

The saying goes "Happy as a clam in high tide" which makes sense as a clam in low tide can be dug up and eaten.

Oh' I'll bite, Give me a few clams, I'd love to get rid of this mortgage payment, and then I'd be happy with a few clams... That isn't what you meant is it? Hmmm? What did you think of the vegetarian Porterhouse? Poor holy bovines feeding the world, We need a few more happy clams

Happy as a clam? Well why the hell wouldn't ya be happy? No work to worry about, no taxes to pay, no woman to give you crap 24/7, you live for friggin' 100+ years and every now and then you get to clamp down on someone's foot and drown the bugger! They have stress relieving activities like that available to them and they don't even GET stressed! Sounds alright to me sconi.....

Every man understands this saying. Imagine being able to just sit around all day doing nothing and all you have to do is open your mouth and your food fall right into your mouth. It's a dream come true.

Perhaps it is not so much the happiness of the clam as the happiness they make you feel when consumed. Aren't they considered an aphrodisiac( I think that's how it's spelled)??? I know the only way I have eaten them is in clam chowder(new england style) and they make me happy then. I do think people associate their happiness with this and translate it to clams being happy. I too have been known to say "happy as a clam" in my lifetime without ever considering what it meant other than someone is happy. I'll have to give thought to what other things I say need some translation of meaning...hmmm...Mamablaze!!

Hmm I'm not really sure I wouldn't consider all those things that you listed something to be happy about but I guess they can make certain people happy. Have you ever heard the song "Clams Have Feelings Too" by NOFX because it sounds that you have just basically taken the lyrics and posted them. I don't clams are clams and they'll probably always be clams. I don't think we're really missing out on all that much except for maybe the bottom of a lake, river, or ocean. Pretty good post I would have to say.
