I was taking something out for dinner when I noticed that my freezer could use a good cleaning. I remember hearing somewhere that if you clean out your freezer it works better and can actually save you some money. I am wondering: How often should I clean out my freezer? Does it really save you money? Why?

Unless your freezer has a buildup of ice, there's no point to cleaning it out. With frost-free freezers, the only cleaning out necessary is gettiing rid of food that's been in there too long and is no longer in top condition, and wiping the surfaces down now and then if they're looking as if they need it. A buildup of ice will make the compressor run more, but that's the only thing that has an effect on how it runs or on your electric bill.
