Yesterday my DH and I decided to keep our son home from school for the Inaguration and today we are being told that my son is being marked as unexcused! This angers me, as my son is a top student in the first grade and also has PERFECT ATTENDANCE and has also never been in any trouble. We are in CA and I have contacted the district and am getting the run around and sent to voice mails. Any advice as to how to handle this? Thanks! :)

There is no way that they will allow that to be an excused absence as I am sure that they were watching the inauguration in school too. I wouldn't worry about it and you done what you felt needed to be done so who cares what the school says. I feel that it is time that more parents take a stand for what they want their children to learn. It was a day in history and he will always remember that it was important enough that he didn't attend school that day. Perfect attendance is nothing compared to sharing such a special day in history with your child.

I understand where you're coming from. Yes, this Inauguration was an historic event in American History, HOWEVER, it's not listed in the rule books as an excusable absence. Unless that day has been officially made a national holiday, the school will not make it an excused absence. Even if you reach the district superintendent I'm pretty sure he's going to say "no". In reality, I don't think we should EXPECT them to consider it an excused absence. I'm sure all schools expected students to attend school and then it would be discussed in the classrooms. Whenever the reason is questionable, and the school insists being given a reason - I just tell them the child had a fever or was sick.
