Cockatiel

I was thinking of getting a cockatiel because my friend has one and both my father and I completely adore this bird but they got it as a gift and don't know much about how much they cost or the life span. I was wondering if anyone has any idea where these birds can be bought generally (the pet stores in my town don't carry birds such as this), the cost of a bird like that and the life span of that kind of bird. Thanks guys!

I have been looking at possibly getting one too. Where I am they seem to typically run around $50 to $100 depending on age and how tame they are already. They have very long life spans, about 50 years. I believe that most companion birds have similar life spans. I am looking to getting one because it seems that a bird would be more fun than many types of pets and would be safe around the children.

For living to be fifty years old, that's definately not a bad investment. It's only what.. $1-$2 a year if you really want to average it out. :-) I have other animals and I've seen where eventually they become accustomed to having a bird around and don't seem to mind them. I heard that most people begin with a hanging cage and then sometimes get a larger one that will sit on the floor. That's what I want to do.

Actually it is a good investment and my most likely pet soon. I am getting my children a gunea pig an dmy husband a Bearded dragon and then I get a bird. We also have fish and plans to get a dog.

We have one of those birds. My brother actually bought it around 10 years ago. It was around $75 when he bought it back then. I am not sure how much they are now. He got his at a pet store.

Wow, that's actually a lot less than I was predicting that they would cost! Maybe the pet stores in our area are just too small to carry these kind of birds!

yah i have cockatiels and they are so adorable. I'm training to make them talk and feed them with fruits and even vegetables but most of the time i give them seeds

Cockatiels (and other birds) shouldn't be fed primarily a seed diet. It can cause health problems and they may not live as long. Here's a link to more information: http://www.cockatielcottage.net/diet.html Fresh fruits and vegetables are good though, as well as a good pellet food such as Zupreem or Roudybush. A little seed can be given as a treat, but like I said shouldn't be part of their regular meals. Happy mylotting!
