http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20090123/tuk-despicable-shannon-mum-gets-jail-45dbed5.html (I am sorry ... you do need to read the story before answering) Your 'gut' feelings may be complicated ... don't worry, that's normal! When you read such a story, are you first filled with anger, disgust, compassion ... or even distrust of the media? What are your next feelings? Do you need to know more before deciding? Did the picture of Karen Matthews affect your judgement? What do you first feel, and why? If you subscribe to any 'ethos' or 'moral code' (Notice I am careful to exclude any particular 'religion' from this ... though you are welcome to mention it, if you feel it explains your position), what does your 'code' say about it? In your country, what would be done with such people? Would you agree with that?

She had me fooled heart broken and worried,it is easy with hindsight to look back and say this and that ,I think she is a horrible cruel woman to allow that to happen to her own child. They do say someone else master minded it as they were not bright enough to think it up but they are waiting for further evidence.I do trust the media in these cases because it is down to the police to release information and say what has to be printed. They said on our news that the case had no presedent in law as far as the records go back.No one has tried this before and so it was hard to see how the law was on this point.Karen Matthews got eight years imprisnmemt four years in prison and the other four out on licence.Personally I think she should be locked up for life hanging is to good for her, keep her alive and let her suffer, the guy got the same sentence.they will both have lots oc accidents in side as not one person likes to anyone who has hurt a kid.I don't think it is down to religion or culture ,no body likes or agrees with what those two have done .That poor little girl she is really messed up,life was not easy in that house as it was ,some people should never be allowed the privilage of having children to bring up,like every parent everywhere I am upset and disgusted by this crime.

Thank you, Suzzy. Yes, when the news first came on (and before we knew of the deception), I think everyone felt sorry for the mother. Now, I am sure, everyone will feel the same as you.

My gut feeling is that some people shouldn't be allowed to have children. But unfortunately there is no way to screen for that. Other than that, if there were other people involved, I would hope that the authorities are making a serious effort to find them. I think the child needs to be put in a safer home and I don't think I need more facts to decided that. The picture didn't influence my feelings at all. My code says take the child away and put the idiots in prison. And that is most likely what would happen here in the US.

My first feelings were anger and ameazement that any mother could do this to their child. Then I thought about the people I had worked with who had no parenting skills because they weren't taught them by their own parents. I was still angry but more at a society thet lets poor parenting continue from one generation to the next than at Karen Matthews. My views didn't change on seeing the mother, it just confirmed that she did not seem to have had any good parenting. She is responsible for her own actions and should be punished but if she has more children she must be taught how to care for them properly.

Owl, My gut feeling is sadness. I am overwhelmed by people who can do such things as this for any amount of money. MONEY? Even if they got away with it, whatever they do to the child can't be worth $50,000.00?? The article mentioned the lack of intelligence!! No amount of money or lack of intelligence makes this ok. My mind cannot comprehend this kind of behaviour. There is a horror story right here in Orland, Florida that is breaking my heart. Have you heard any of it? It's the Anthony Case. As far as what our justice system would do is beyond me. There isn't anything they could do to them that would make it all right. I'll pray for the little girl. leenie

Thanks, Leenie. I haven't heard of the Anthony case. I can't imagine what would have happened if they had got away with it. I think that the story would have come out in the end, anyway. I agree that no justice system is capable of righting wrongs, especially in a case like this. I guess that the little girl does have a slim chance of a better life in care than she might have had otherwise. Let's hope and pray for that. Being in a care home is not like family life, though, however good the carers are.

The gut feeling was surprise. Never thought such a thing could happen. Wow what a plan! This was followed by anger because of the insensitivity shown towards the child, even animals do not allow any harm to come to thier children. My next thought was " This will make a good movie plot" & then i went about planning the screen play of the shot when the girl is found. You have agreed that the gut feeling can be complicated haven't you !!!!

Interesting! I would be fascinated to see how you would handle the story. There are so many different angles from which it might be approached. The main message need not be the (undoubtedly just) sentence of the mother and b/f's uncle at all!

The story upset me & I feel the adults involved should get some jail time. I think 4 years the least & maybe some parenting skills & they should never get to see their daughter again. What they did was stupid & careless. & seeing the picture of the mother didn't change my views, just made me want to choke her even more... she's ignorant... why do such a dumb thing?

Hi Owlwings, As I mother myself I protect my children not kidnap them for money. This woman had so many kids that as well as her sentence I think that she should be sterilised so that she can not have any more to be this cruel too in the future also, that is is she survives in jail. I am sad to think that there is this sort of evil in the world but I must say that noting suprises me anymore, kids as young as ten killing and torturing other kids, where is the love? So gut feeling was sadness. Huggles. Ellie :D
