Which coast line would be the best family orientated vacation spot? Every summer I have spent my vacations in San Francisco but this summer of 2009 I'd like to take my family somewhere different and even far away. Got any suggestions?

Where are you from? I'm from South Carolina and while the water isn't very blue, you could always try East coast beaches like Wilmington, NC; Charleston, SC; Hilton Head, SC; Myrtle Beach, SC; and then there is also Florida. I've never been to Destin but have seen pictures and it's BEAUTIFUL!

I'm from California :) I've been to most of the beaches up and down the west coast here and noticed that the coastal line in Washington can be very cold. Oregon coast line is awesome but can (like any other I suppose) can get crowded. California coast line is great but far too expensive (San Francisco I have found is the cheapest place to spend a vacation). I've not been to many beaches on the east side of the states. I'll have to keep this in mind, thanks!

Newport Oregon is a great place to stay. It's about half way up (or down) the Oregon coast. Newport itself has a lot to offer. Great resturants, hotels, bed and breakfasts, cabins if you like. They have the Hatfield Marine Science Center. Lots of cool stuff to see there including a hands on exhibit where kids can handle starfish, anenomies, chitons etc. They have a bunch of exhibits including an octopus and exhibits that are interactive games to test your survival skills as a crab or pollock fish. They have the Oregon Coast Aquarium with over 8,000 marine animals including sharks, sea lions, sea otters, bat rays etc. Their exhibits include a sting ray touch pool (they have had their barbs removed so they are safe to touch) a walk through sea bird aviary and more. Besides their exhibits they have a tunnel you walk through and down into the ocean and have all this sea life swarming all around you. It's really cool. Mariners Square has a Ripleys Believe It Or Not Museum, Wax Works Museum and Undersea Gardens. Ripleys Believe it or not has a live stage show as well as exhibits of some of the worlds odd and bizarre things. The Wax Works Museum is filled with hollywood legends, sci fi creatures etc. The Undersea Gardens has continuous Dive Shows with scuba divers equipped with underwater communications acting as your tour guides. There's Yaquina Bay and Yaquina Head Lighthouses that you can tour. There's Hero ship tours - a wooden ship with cloth sails that was used for research in the Antartic Peninsula. Of course there are lots of attractions then up and down the coast from there. I picked Newport because it's central. At Florence (south of Newport) You've got Honeyman state park with a nice lake and huge sand dunes. You can rent dune buggies to ride the dunes, you can rent horses to ride the beach. The Sea Lion Caves are 11 miles north of Florence and you can go down into the cave (by elevator) and see the sea lions up close. Bandon (south of Florence) has America's largest wild animal petting park. Over 450 animals some free roaming. Lion cubs, cougar cubs, bear cubs that kids can pet. If shopping is on your list...Lincoln City (North of Newport) is where you want to go. They have a whole slew of outlet stores...Columbia Sportswear, Liz Claiborne, Eddie Bauer, Gap, Gap Kids, Pac Sun, Wilsons Leather, Bass Shoe, Rebok Factory Direct, Totes Inc, Perfumia, London Fog, Maidenform, Old Navy, Oshkosh, Pendleton Woolen Mills... that's not even half of them. The outlet stores are cheaper than where you anywhere else you can buy these name brands. Tillamook (north of Lincoln City) is famous for it's dairy products. Cheese, butter, Ice Cream, Yogurt and they make great fudge. They have a self guided tour, farmhouse cafe, ice cream counter and fudge counter. From Garibaldi (just north of Tillamook) You can take a ride on the Oregon Coast Scenic Railway. Their website says the steam engine is down with mechanical problems, but it is still running with a 1951 vintage diesel passenger locomotive to pull the train. Further north you have Seaside with lots of attractions including Ft Clatsop (15 miles north of Seaside) which is where Lewis & Clark ended their expedtion. Young River falls (discovered by Lewis & Clark) is a popular picniking and hiking area with a 65 ft waterfall that was part of the backdrop in filming Free Willy II. Astoria just north of Seaside is where Goonies was filmed. The Columbia River Maritime Museum is here among other attractions. This is getting long! All up and down oregons coast you've got great beaches, golf courses, casinos-wineries- breweries if that's your thing... hiking, fishing, crabbing, clamming. Festivals - Art festivals, music festivals, rhododenron festivals, kite festivals. Antique shops, local crafters shops. There's no lack of things to do.
