My husband and I want to get a saint bernard. We've done a lot of research and have learned many great things about them. Would love to hear personal experiences with them and also other views. (good/bad)

My aunt and uncle had a St. Bernard when I was growing up. My word he was a BIG boy! LOL! My personal experience with him is that he was so gentle, such a "loving" kind of dog, easygoing disposition, great with all the kids in the family... no one ever seemed to worry about him being around any child, even babies. They lived in a flat though and I never thought it was the right living situation for him because he was simply too big for their accommodations. He didn't have much of a yard to move around in and they didn't walk him enough to get him out for exercise. St. Bernards, being a large breed dog, are prone to hip dysplasia so, as I understand it, careful feeding and exercise are beneficial to avoid them becoming overweight. St. Bernards also drool a LOT (which is a turn off for a lot of people, especially if they don't realize it before they first get slobbered on LOL) and they tend to shed quite a lot. I think he was a wonderful, beautiful dog, though... simply owned by the wrong family with the wrong living situation for him. Best of luck on your decision!

Thank you so much for your thoughts! :-) This is pretty much what I've heard. They are a GREAT "family" dog and amazing with children too! This is one of our main concerns! From my research I have definitely learned that they need adequate exercise and large livings spaces are much more beneficial. Thank you again for you response - I'm just getting a "feel" and want to be reassured!

My pleasure, cindy! It was nice to remember him really He definitely had what I laughingly call "puppy syndrome"... he was this big dog that wanted to put his head in your lap or get as close to you as he could. If you DO decide on a St. Bernard, I hope you'll post here and show us pictures! I had a scottish terrier/bichon frisee cross up until he had to be put down two winters ago. I miss him so much but I'm also not ready for the commitment of a new dog right now. It's not good timing. So, I live vicariously through others and their furry friends
