Do washing machines really live longer with Calgon?

Has anyone ever experimented and used the same make of washing machine for years, using Calgon in one and not in the other?
I suppose it probably is true because Calgon has been around for a very long time. What do you think?

The adverts have addled your brain.
My first automatic washing machine lasted 15 years and I didn't use calgon maybe it woud still be working now if I had.
