I agree with you that beggars are a nuisance, especially when they breach the "protocol". Beggar problems are particularly daunting in the poor countries of the world, including mine - Nigeria. However, we have no choice but live with the problem. Economic problems keep worsening by the day, and people are losing their means of sustenance, or the means of sustenance is rapidly getting inadequate. Unfortunately, we have abandoned our duty of being our brother's keeper and the extended family system is fast disappearing. Let us thank our stars where only the beggars are the nuisance. I even thank and commend them for choosing to beg to keep body and soul together. It is much worse where some of the beggars degenerate into armed robbers. Where this happens, people will come to appreciate the patriotic role of beggars. Often here in my country, whenever I run into a gang of what we call "area boys", who swarm on us for "chop money", I inwardly commend them for choosing to undertake their forcible begging rather than joining armed gangs. Our leaders have a great role to play in minimizing the incidence of begging in our societies. Let them be less corrupt; let them create enabling environments for job creation and gainful employment; let them introduce social security system. Otherwise, there is great danger of the nuisance beggars turning into dreaded robbers.

You could report it to security. I can't believe this happens on a collee campus. I hate that. It sounds like your problem is even worse than my experiences. Outside Mcdonalds those beggars would be asking for money, telling stories like they are just trying to get enough money for a train ticket back home. But you could say no, I don't have any money, walk away and they would leave you alone.

I would give them food but let them know that I am not a push over. I guess being homeless myself at one point in my earlyer life, I have more respect for all men & women. Plus, helping them out is good karma.
