Any Boxer Owners?

My mom just bought my family a Boxer puppy for my birthday. Her name is Tela Rayne, and she is now about 11wks old. We have had her since she was 8wks. My husband has bought 2 boxer books (more like instruction manuals lol) and we have been going over these books like they were the bible. And it seems like boxers are very high maintenance if these books are to be believed. Neither of us are strangers to owning and rearing pups to full grown dogs, but I would just like some first hand person to person information from any one out there that actually owns a Boxer. We love Tela very much, and I think we just want to do everything in our power to ensure she grows to be a great Boxer :)

Thanks! Tela is a Dark Fawn with a white chest, two of her paws have white socks, and she has an all black snout. Her eyes are a kind of dark gray, which is really pretty on her. She is very active and I try to let her out as much as I can without leaving the kids in the house by themselves for too long. We are trying to socialize her so that she is not aggressive with other dogs when she is older, because, once again, lol the books say this can happen with Boxers.

I saw him, he is so adorable! I will post pics of Tela soon :) I figured it would be like most other dogs, when they aren't neutered or spayed that they would be more aggressive and active. We will be getting her spayed in a couple months. How big is Bandit by the way? Tela's dad was about 80lbs and her mom was around 60lbs, so I know they can get to be a hefty size.

Aww, she sounds beautiful! I have some pictures of mine on my profile if you want to see, he's fawn with a white chest and a white stripe between his eyes and white socks. As long as you keep letting her play with friendly dogs she should be fine, I have only met one boxer that was aggressive, and he was an unneutered male.

My uncle owns and breeds Boxers, and he loves them. He's got one that's a huge baby, he's always in the car with him, sleeps with him, even pottys with him lol.. They are great dogs, can be little high maintenance only because they are attention dogs, they also love to run. They are playful, and when taught are awesome with kids. But always try to keep your's busy or you may end up finding something half chewed or a huge hole dug in your yard. Some say the this breed is very hard headed, but my uncle has never had an issue with training them. Best wishes on your new puppy, may she bring you lots of love!

I have to say that my Tela is pretty hard headed! lol she doesn't like to come when you call her and she loves to go the OPPOSITE way of wherever you are telling her to go :) but she is a good girl and we love her a lot, I just hope she comes out of the hardheaded stage before getting old and set in her ways!

I have a beautiful brindle boxer named Ruby. She's about a year old now, but I got her when she was around 5 months old. Both her parents are AKC registered and she has a longer official name, but I got her fixed and just call her Ruby. She's my baby girl, too. I absolutely love her. She's very good with my grandkids, too. Boxers are very strong, so you have to watch them around small children because they can get a little too rough playing with the kids, unintentionally.

Thanks for responding Becki! Yes, I have noticed that Tela gets a little rough with the kids but she usually simmers down when we give her a firm "no" or "no bite", we are trying to teach her "gentle" so that she knows not to play so aggressively. Is Ruby stubborn? Because Tela is DEFINITELY stubborn and likes to things her own way lol :)

When I lived in my grandmas house, I used to take care of two boxers named Ski and Isko. They aren't really very high maintenance. They are well behaved and good tempered but they are also very strong so they have to be trained to walk on a leash properly. But we had a problem with Ski. She had a false pregnancy, then later on developed mastitis. She also had 7 babies before and only one survived. My grandma spent a lot on the vet that time... The only one that survived is the one named Isko. Isko is considered a reject when it comes to boxer standards. Although he is pure breed he doesn't have the markings of a good boxer dog and he is white. Nevertheless, he is a very good dog.

I am sorry to hear about what happened to Ski. I think we are planning on getting Tela spayed so she won't have to worry about the puppy situation. I have heard about the white boxers being non regulation because they are prone to being deaf and having disorders. But I see that Isko has proven them wrong. Thanks for your answer :)

I don't own boxers, I don't own any kind of dogs as a matter of fact but I remember ,when I was a kid, the boxer was my dream dog. Well, time changed my preferences. I'm more a labrador guy nowadays. Maybe in the future I will afford to buy one.

My parents have a Golden Retrieve and growing up I had a Cocker Spaniel. As a teenager I kept mostly mutts with a mix of Chowchow in them, and they were always great dogs. But when my husband and I had kids, we discovered that our children don't like dogs with a lot fur. They usually pull their hair and all kinds of other things, and they don't like small dogs. So we had to find a dog that was going to big, AND not have long hair. My mom bought us the boxer, and so far both the puppy and our kids are happy :)
