Are parents too neurotic today?

When did parents become so neurotic ? Are they doing more damage with this parental behavior or is it a better way? When I was growing up my friends and I would set up bike ramps to jump just like Evil Knievel. If you don't know who that is, look it up. No helmets, no pads, nothing. Maybe my mother just didn't give a crap but they seemed to worry less back then. Thoughts?

It's very difficult to compare today to yesterday as far as bringing up kids is concerned. When I was a child I'd wander off all day climbing trees and exploring, but when my daughter was growing up it was considered irresponsible to let children out of your sight. I gave her as much freedom as I could, but didn't like it if I didn't know where she was. The other problem is that if other people don't think you a guarding your children all the time, they are quite likely to be taken away and put into care - it's ridiculous, but true.

Depends on the parent and what worldly thing worries them. I worry about people who take kids so I watch the kids when they are outside. I don't stop them from doing the things I did when younger. I have an awesome picture of the kids in the tree at the new house. I pick my battles. I look out for labels because of a food allergy my little guy has and lead because of high levels showing up in my children's blood work. I guess other parents may cover those things and more based on news reports but I think that it's all on our own experiences that decides how we act.
