Hi Friends! My oldest daughter is turning 14 yrs old next month and I am at a loss for any good ideas for a party for her. She wanted to go to the lake and go tubing, but this time of year in our part of the world is pretty cold and still have snow on the ground, YIKES! So I told her that it probably wasn't going to happen until summer to do the lake thing. She is kind of emo, but not drastic. Not foo-foo. A great kid and a great student. Has respectable friends, so I wanted to do something really neat for her. ANY IDEAS MY FELLOW MYLOTTERS??

Hello shopgrl75...Turning 14 years old is such a difficult age and I can see your dilemma in finding a suitable party idea for her. Shes at an age where she probably wants some independance from parents but needs those parents to get her independance..lol...I know, sounds strange. I guess it depends on whether or not money is a big issue and what is available where you live. March is kinda crappy month weatherwise. Do you have any indoor water theme parks where you live? What about a pool party? Can you rent an hour of pool time at a local pool? A friend of mine took her 15 year old and a few friends to a hotel for a night with a pool and waterslide and pizza party afterwards and they all stayed the night, rented movies and ate pizza. They all loved it. Does she have any ideas what she would like to do? Is a sleepover possible with perhaps bingo games for little prizes, movies and music. When my daughter turned 13, she wanted a spooky themed party even though her birthday is nowhere near halloween. All her friends came in costumes and we turned 2 rooms in the basement into a haunted house..complete with bowls of spaghetti and marbles..or I meant eyeballs!!..lol...WE draped off one section to be dark, and I sat inside dressed as a zombie and the kids thought I was fake til I grabbed them in the dark. She said it was the best party she ever had. Also theres bowling parties. Its really hard to say, not knowing what your daughter likes to do

Kidnap parties are the best. When my best friend's daughter turned 16, we kidnapped her and three of her friends at 6:00 am, in their pajamas, and took them to breakfast at Denny's. They were horrified, but secretly had a blast.

My daughter is turning 15. Her and her friends are going to the dinner theater. We are planning a dance for her 16th. If it is tubing she really wants, would she consider holding off her party for a month or two?

A dinner theater would be really neat, but we don't have anything like that here. We had a dinner train, not only did it go out of business, but it was really expensive. We agreed that she would be going tubing this summer with her friends, but now just trying to figure a cool replacement for the actual birthday. Thank you for your thoughts laglen.

Hi shopgrl! My daughter is 15 but, because of other commitments, she didn't have a party for her 15th birthday so I do remember her 14th LOL She is not foo-foo either and she didn't want the typical bowling or movie outing. She really wanted to have a party at home but she stressed that she didn't want a "kiddie party". I was fine with it but wondered how to entertain them. We decided the best thing would be to have active things to do. She already had a karaoke mic (which is so easy and just plugs right into the tv for the lyrics) so we went to the website and ordered up some new songs for that (she picked them all based on what she thought the group would like the most). Then she has both Eyetoy and a DDR dancepad for the PS2 so we had those ready to rig up. I also burned several CDs of 80s, dance, rock and other music that was more upbeat and felt a little more "party"-ish. I thought it was risky and that they might not want to do these things but they ended up singing at the top of their lungs (I even got invited to sing a few LOL) and they did some competing with the DDR and such. There was enough to do and the group wasn't too big so no one was left sitting bored... but, also, the girls were so great with each other because, if someone wanted to sit out and just watch or listen, no one bothered them about it. One girl was a bit shy but, by the middle of the party, she was up and belting out a song too LOL Also, for the food, I tried to treat them in a more adult way ... I made a cold buffet of assorted sandwiches, potato salad, coleslaw, veggies and dip, a fruit platter, some chips and snacks, and some homemade chocolate chip cookies. Then ice cream cake for the birthday girl. They ate SO much but I guess it was because they had been active all day LOL The girls seemed to really enjoy the more "grown up" food service because they kept saying "jeez we usually only get hotdogs" LOL I had toyed around with doing a taco bar but the mostly cold food made it flexible for me to just lay everything out when they were actually hungry. I also pared down on the decorations to look less like a kid's party... I used metallic balloons, a white fabric tablecloth and had coordinated plates and cutlery for the table. It was pretty without being "kitschy", you know? I didn't make goodie bags because of their age. Instead, I bought each girl a small silver frame and, during the party, I took a group picture and also a one on one of each girl with my daughter. While they were doing their activities, I printed them out and framed the individual shots (with a group shot tucked in behind that so they could switch them around anytime). Each girl's frame went into one of those tiny metallic gift bags, along with a small body spray. Really easy stuff but the girls loved them. Whatever she ends up with, a very happy 14th to your daughter! I hope she enjoys her day :) :)

That sounded so awesome!! What a blast! Thank you thinkingoutloud for such wonderful ideas! I was toying with the idea of a taco bar just last night, but you make a good point. I like the metallic color idea too, I feel a sense of HOPE! lol, thank you again!

Hope is good! LOL It's hard to come up with affordable ideas, too, as they get older. It seems like not only the gifts but the parties get more and more costly! I read above that your daughter wants pink and black? That could be AWESOME for decorating. It also gave me another idea (sorry I post a lot but I love chatting about this stuff LOL)... you could get them some (cheap) men's white tshirts from a discount department store. Stock up on pink and black Sharpies (or fabric paint... but my kids LOVE the permanent markers). Let them make personalized shirts -- they can draw on or "autograph" each other's, do hello kitty cartoons, anything fun, basically like signing yearbooks but on a shirt. Just heat set them after in the dryer. Makes for a nice souvenir. You say they are good students so they might also have a blast trying this "experiment", as an alternative. It's basically "Sharpie Tie Dye"... I've been hanging on to this idea myself and forgot I had it bookmarked: http://www.stevespanglerscience.com/experiment/00000032

Thank you again. That is a really cool website! It is a great idea for the girls to do on the sleep-over. And a souvenir as well. I like the way your brain works!

You can go to an indoor teen park or surprise her by inviting her friends over for dinner or sleep over. I think this would help you too, http://www.gifti.us
