Are job fair lines the bread lines of 2009?

I remember seeing pictures of all the people waiting in line for bread during the Great Depression, a sign that Americans were hungry and needed help. Lately, again and again I've seen news coverage of Job Fairs where hundreds or thousands of people show up to stand in long lines with the hope of applying for only a few positions. Recently down here in Florida thousands sat in line all night hoping for a chance to apply for a few positions as firefighters. Every time I see coverage like this I'm reminded of those bread lines from the past. Does anyone else feel the same way?

I do get that same feeling. I was talking to some investors and they told me that the best investment right now is food. I had a little money I wanted to invest, guess where it is? In my pantry and freezer. I think we need to be prepared.

Sure does seem like it. Hundred standing in lines only to be turned away when the positions are filled. It is scary. I certainly hope things turn around quickly.

It goes. It just dosent seem like anything that they decide to do works quick enough! There needs to be a much better stimulus package providing many more jobs...and also they need to increase the food production as well as creating competition,, in the food markets to bring those prices down!

I saw that on the news with all those people in line for the firefighter jobs. I saw the same kind of lines at a thrift store in California where there were only a few job openings but several hundred showed up to apply. I feel the same as you do, it sure it reminiscent of the bread lines from the Depression! One thing is for sure, nobody can say that people aren't looking for work. Annie

Thanks for the BR! I see the unemployment numbers are still going up. We need jobs, and GOOD jobs, not just part-time jobs. Annie

Yep, I get the same reminder. It's terrible. And in the back of my mind I know that this is just the beginning and the bread lines won't be far off. I sure hope we can turn this around before it comes to that.
