Questions Regarding Freelance Sites

I've been trying to get some information about working with freelance sites. If I'm trying to apply for a job is there a fee? I thought on one site I read that you have to pay $5 for each assignment given to you. Why would I want to pay for work? Also do you bid for the time it would take to do the whole task or by the hour? Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

Any sites that ask you to pay are a scam. Trust me! Many sites will ask for two or three samples of your work. That is quite acceptable and reasonable. Most will pay you by the article/job, not by the hour (how would they know how long you spent?) It is up to you to make the most efficient use of your time. If you are bidding for work, it's a good idea to look at the site for a few days (if you can) to see what others are expecting for the kind of work you are doing.

projectcolony.com, odesk.com, getafreelancer.com and there are many more free sites where you can bid without any fees.
