Hints for cleaning?

I am looking for any secret tricks you folks may have for cheap, common sense, old fashioned ways to clean things. I'm hoping to avoid expensive cleaning products. I'm tired of throwing things out because I can't get the stain out/it's broken and it's cheaper to buy new than try to have a professional cleaner/repairman work on it. Items I am particularly looking for hints on are : carpeting, rugs, coats, broken ZIPPERS!, shoes, stained tupperware, seriously dusty lampshades, etc, etc, etc What are some old tried and true methods that you may know of for fixing, cleaning and extending the useful life of our everyday things?

I appreciate your discussion. I got some great ideas! My input - for stained tupperware or any other plastic dishes, let it sit out side on a very sunny day, it bleaches it naturally and removes stains! For a carpet refresher, we have three large dogs and smoke, I sprinkle baking soda, let sit for 20 minutes then vacuum. It absorbs odors. and our vacuum doesn't stink! Vinegar cleans hard water stains, windows, counters....... A drycleaner in our area does a coat drive and they will clean and do repairs. Also, older coats you can keep for working outside. We also keep a couple extra, if we have company or if I am babysitting and the kids don't have anything appropriate to wear outside. Good luck to you!

You can find some ideas on Tipnut. They are all about frugal and making things yourself. Have fun! Youll spend a lot of time there!

I don't have any great ideas for old fashion ways to clean anything, however I purchase all my cleaning supplies from the Dollar Tree. This is a dollar store that is truly a dollar store (everything in the entire store is only 1 dollar). Anyways, I purchase all my cleaning supplies from them. You can also find carpet cleaner, shoe polish, etc. there. Hope this helps.

!. Wash in cold water. it will save either gas or electricity which ever heats your water. Use hand soap to rub out stains in clothing. This has worked for me even stains that have been through the dryer. Add a cup of white vinegar to the final rinse to remove all soap and and as a softener. 2 dusty lamp shades can be cleaned by putting your vacuum hose on the end that blows out the air. Carpets can be cleaned with corn meal or corn starch if you do it as quickly as possible.
