What will you do if you lose your job?

In an hour's time, I will be called into our company's finance director's room. Fortunately, it's not me alone but together with my teammates. I have no idea what to expect but I'm trying not to expect the worst which is job retrenchment. However, during such time, it's nothing new and such things can happen anytime. I have already made some plans for myself if I really lose my current job. But what about you? Have you actually make plans and know what to do if you lose your job one day? Or you are pretty sure you won't lose your job at all?

I'm not real sure what I'd do but I'd do something. I'm a survivor. I hope and pray that I don't end up in that situation but it is happening all around me and I know it is a possibility. I'll find some way to earn money. I always have. Good luck with the meeting. I hope it isn't bad news.

I don't know how exactly these companies are working? Sometimes some of there decisions are very confusing and even shocking. Well I was working for a firm and at a location which was at a distance of hour from my place and my performance was also good. One day they told me that I to shift my work location from current place to the place which is too far from my home. I decided and even started to go there but I realized that it is too far from my place and it is time consuming also. That's why next day I told about it to my manager but they told me its a do or die situation. Other wise I have to travel for 4 hours daily to go to my job. I never expected that I have to resign from my job due to such reason.

The market is pretty bad now and starting a business might not be the best course of action. But it does depend on what you are planning to do.

In October I became a scapegoat for a lot of issues that were going on at my former job. I was forced to resign from my position. I was so entrenched in my job that I was miserable after it happened. Looking back now six months later, it was the best thing that happened in my life. I was miserable at my former job. I never really realized how horrible my job made me. I guess what I am trying to say is sometimes you have to be thankful for unanswered prayers.

Yeah, things do happen for a reason. I'm sure whatever happens now, the dots will connect with each other in the end, as Steve Jobs once said.

the only way I'll lose my job is if the whole place shuts down, I quit four months ago, and my boss called me begging me to come back, so I did, but I feel bad for those who arent as secure in their job, but lets say if I did lose my job, I already have an offering somewhere else that will give me more hours, so I wouldnt sweat it too bad, but if I didnt have that security either, I'd probably spaz out and put in applications at every business within a 6 mile radius of my house

But that opportunity will not be there forever right? :) There are few requests for my skills few months back, and now, all of them have closed those vacancies due to the economy crisis.

Hi daydreamer20 - I don't have a job so I guess I have nothing to lose! All kidding aside, I hope everything turns out ok for you. I'm sure by now you know what it was all about. Let us know so we won't worry about you. Take care.

It is a very difficult prospect of course to even imagine losing your job and source of livelihood. However I think we need to be ready to face the consequences and not get too emotional about it.I have myself been through two recessions.Th elast one in 2001 and the current one.And hence I believe that I have become hardened a bit.Hence I feel that I am now better prepared to face a job loss.

My salary has just been reduced by 40% and I'm going into -ve cash flow in May. It's actually worse than retrenchment because if I'm being retrenched, I still get 2 months of pay due to my employment contract.

I won't panic at all. I'm an accountant and it is always been easy for me to find a job. Even if I am not applying, I receive a lot of calls from big companies telling me about their vacancies for accounting posts and if I would consider applying to their company. But as of now, I am very much satisfied on how my company is treating its employees.

Accountant is one of the most secured jobs around. My sister is an accountant so I know how secure her job is especially during economy crisis.

i will rejoice hahaha, i am so not happy at work right now and i feel like i am just waiting for my boss to kick me out before i find another job and resign instead. i know i need the job and the money but sometimes, it is so not worth it going to work and being "put down". my housemate came home one night and said he will be terminated because he has low performance appraisal for the past two quarters and it is the basis for his termination unless he resigns. so he resigned instead. good thing there are other jobs open, however, the offer is not as good as his current pay

If I lose my job, I'd like to have a shower in an hour's time to relax. And then call my friend to turn to for help! But I will not tell the news to my parents in order not to be troulbed and worried! In fact there is need for me to worry about it until 2011, but I think it is better to make a plan in advance. Thank you for your sharing! Wish you hunt another good job!

That is quite similar to what I did when my bosses told me my salary will be reduced by 40%.

If I lose job, I will find place to relax myself first and come back for new job hunting with full energy. Surely, a plan shall be made in advance.

Yes I agree always plan ahead and try and have some form of contingency plan. The days of absolute loyalty to one employer are long gone and it would seem for most people the days of remaining with the same employer during their working life is also a thing of the past. It really irritates me the way companies treat their employees especially when people lose there jobs due to bad management.

Simple question. If I lose my job, then find another one. hehe
