Is there a purgatory?

Catholic beliefs hold that there is a purgatory where the "unsure" whether hell or heaven bound stay in limbo. I dont know if there is a biblical back up to this doctrine but personally I don't believe that there is one. The bible has been vocal that the final destination of men after death could only be either heaven or hell. What do you think about this?

I believe there is no biblical verse that supports the existence of purgatory. In fact Jesus mentions only two kinds of gates, the narrow and wide gates. As it is written in Matthew chapter 7 :13 -14; "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. So there are only two destinations in the after life. It is hell or destruction and heaven or eternal life.

Pretty much straightforward, direct and biblically supported. So if purgatory is not found in the bible, is it the only thing that is not biblical among the many other doctrines or teachings?

Thanks for the info. That was indeed a lot. I just hope people will be enlightened and find the truth that Jesus Christ is the only way and nothing more. It's quite sad though that even in the obvious state of this doctrines to be paganistic in nature and biblically unfounded, they still remain and actually hold many people captive to it.

Frankly, I was more enlightened when I became Catholic than I ever was when I was Methodist. :D

Hi zedlav, There is no Biblical back up for purgatory or staying in limbo, although the Catholic Church has taught it for years. We have to remember of could that all denominations in Christianity teach many things that aren't Biblical. Then again people should never take the Bible literally yet many do. Blessings.

I thought so too. I wonder where the catholic church got this doctrine?

Have any of you bothered to actually buy a Catholic apologetics book and actually do some in-depth study on the teachings of the Church? I'd venture to say most of you have not, as per your replies to this topic. I ask you, that before you go jumping madly up and down and branding the Catholic Church as the you-know-what of Babylon (an accusation so old and unfounded that it's laughable), that you grab as many Catholic apologetics books as you can--read your Aquinas, read up on St. John of the Cross...read up on the saints, a lot of whom were converts to the Church--Edith Stein comes to mind...she was originally a Jew! I pose this question to you all. You're so against the oral teachings of the Church; how, then, did Scripture get passed down from generation to generation before the printing press came along? It's Tradition, not tradition, and yes, there is a difference. Read the apologetics for yourself. You might learn something that you hadn't known before.

Hi zedlav, I am not condemning the Catholic or any other church, I just stated that there is nothing in the Bible about purgatory or staying in limbo. Other denominations also have teachings that aren't Biblical. I have many good friends who are Catholic. Blessings.

Hello Mylot, I don't know much about Catholic beliefs, but the Bible is very clear on the subject of Heaven and Hell. We are currently doing a study on Revelation, and we just past the part where it talks about the "Lambs Book of Life". Ones name needs to be written in the Lambs book of life, in order to receive Life Eternal. And once again there is only one way, and that is accepting Jesus Christ as their personal Savior, and turn from their sin and follow Jesus example. This is what it will take to enter Eternal Life through only Jesus Christ. So getting back to your question, there is only Heaven or Hell, nothing in between. I hope this helps. From Mylot, ccdiane
