Is the Chinese food you get in your country really Chinese?

India

I always believed that what I was having as Chinese food here in India was really Chinese.. But I was surprised to know that it was Indo-Chinese! I realized when I went to a proper Chinese from China restaurant a few months back... To be frank I liked Indo-Chinese better, probably got used to it... Just curious to know if it is just India, or even other countries who have their own versions of Chinese food!

I always wonder this when I order some Chinese from those Fast Food chains we have in America like Panda Express. Even though the workers are Chinese, is the food I'm easting considered "real" Chinese? I have a feeling they have adjusted some of the flavors for us Americans. I also wonder this same thing about the Indian food I eat in America. I used to go to this Indian buffet (owned and operated by Indians) for lunch and I loved the food. Chicken Masala, and Veggie Pakora...Mmmm. I would love to go to China and India to try the real stuff. I have been living in Egypt for three years and I am sick of their food, lol.

I just wanted to add that when an ethnic food is made in another country I don't know if it could ever be considered "real" because the igrredients didn't come from India, China, etc. Case in point when they try to do American food in Egypt...it is not good a thing.

Being an Indian, I love Indian food the most! Indian food remains more or less the same everywhere ( I have tried in UAE, Kenya and South Africa - it tasted the same ) You can be sure of it, if the restaurant is owned by an Indian.

Ya the ingredients make a difference... But then, most of the Indian spices are imported from India.. There may be slight variations in taste, but do not change to the extend of being name Chino-Indian or American-India.. :) It still remains Indian

another person from my town and similar experiences! you can express yourself and say that you like the indo-chinese better but not say that real chinese is the worst etc... Styles change with region and cultural background.. its their style and let it remain theirs.. lets be fair to them

The Chinese food I got overseas are mostly adapted to cater for the local customers. Not so oily, but not so delicate, and usually in much larger portions. There must be exceptions, once in Toronto, in the new Chinese town, I was invited to a Shanghai Restaurant. Its food are even better than what i have in here.

I am living at Georgia, Atlanta here. The Chinese food we are having is not authentic Chinese food either. It was American - Chinese food if your prefer this name. It was adapted to local taste with the Chinese style. Either way, I still love the authentic Chinese food better than others. Because the original always the best.

Tastes vary - I prefer the Indo-Chinese as I have been used it from the begining... Its not that original is always the best, you tend to prefer the one you tasted first..

I think the same even i am from Indian and the chinese we get over here is not at all the real chinese. It doesn`t have that original chinese taste in it. Over here it`s just noodles and the spices which is being used is the typical indian one so what we get is Indo-chinese dish and it`s quite spicy while i think the real chinese is not that much spicy in taste.

I cannot say about that. But i know the taste of chinese food is very good.I too happened to go to a big restaurant for chinese food. They way they served it was completely different and i did not like it.I cannot go to a pure chinese restaurant and waste money for the real chinese food.I would prefer to go to a normal restaurant and have chinese food.

Vishnus- We have a few types here in this country. Where I reside in MN, my husband and I go to two authentic Chinese restaurants, and one authentic Cambodian restaurant. We've been to one Japanese house since being here but we've not had the chance to go back as it is very costly. Namaste-Anora

Actually there's no such thing as "real Chinese" food. Different parts of China has different ways of cooking. Personally I love Sichuan food and Guangzhou food. I find that people there are more daring in experimenting with spices. Generally the staple food for the people in the northern part of China is dumplings, while rice is the staple food for the people in the southern part of China.

Frankly speaking, the food in south China is more delicious than the one in the north. Although I have never been abroad, i like north Chinese food. Happy mylotting!

Well, I'm here in America and I believe the Chinese food we have here is genuine. Most Chinese resturants have Chinese people working there so I would imagine they had a say in the menu. But I suppose some resturants are different then others, that is the beauty of individualism and variety. Maybe original Chinese food is too rich for some people so they don't use the exact ingredients or as much of something as another cook would? Chinese food is actually my favorite!

Here in Calcutta, Chinese is the next favourite food after the local Bengali cuisineā€¦BUT the chinese food we get here would make the Chinese roll in their graves! Its typically Calcutta Chinese with lots of spices and sauces though the variety is restricted to local vegetables and eggs and chicken and pork at a few select places. There are a lot of chinese additions which does not go down well with the Indian palate and the Calcutta cooks have been fast to innovate. The most popular is Fried Rice-Chilli Chicken combo which you will get from fancy 5 star restaurants to roadside eateries and this makes a great food anytime.

The Chinese food in the United States is not really Chinese. I recently learned from a Chinese friend that he and his family does not eat the foods as main courses that you find in Chinese restaurants. Most Chinese foods in most restaurants change the versions of real Chinese food to suite and adjust the taste of the surrounding people. You can always find true Chinese food in China.
