Growing old - a blessing - is it different now?

Yesterday my maternal grand father turned 80 years old. Today we're having a party for him. The one that has baked most stuff is my grandmother (turns 78 years old this summer). I remember when my grandmother turned 50, I felt she was a old lady by that age - my grandparents doesn't seem old now! Even if there have been so many more years! My grandfather stats to get old - I admit, but he still goes far long walks, is out fishing during the winter and so on. His body looks like he's young, with muscels and a tan. His hearing is not like it used to, but still he's functioning really well. My grandmother is as healty as she was in her 50's - she still has her own theeth, she's not even wears glasses! When I grow old I hope I'll be like them. Is it so that older people are healthier now than 30 years ago?

I'd hope older people are healtheir now than they were thirty years ago. Since that time, we've discovered new cures, have come out with brand new studies, and even became more aware of our bodies and mind. Smoking was still accepted then, and as we know now there are a lot of hazards that smoking can cause onto our health. They say with every generation, you can expect the next to live 10-20 years on top of it. Sure, you can take it either way. What has last longer, is our competence for treating our body as a temple, rather than doing what we would like to do normally. It's really a nice thing, if you think about it.

Here in Sweden there is no chance of adding 10-20 years of life to the next generation sinde the avarege lenghth of living here al ready has reached 80 years.

i'm not really sure because the world 30 years ago is definitely healthier, despite the fact that men haven't discovered cures of diseases that time. in this age, we have a lot of different cures for one single disease, but we are also surrounded with a lot of harmful elements.

Scientifically spaking the answer is yes and everyone is thanfull to the advancemnts in the technology but then now i'm twenty years old and i feel that i could have just a year old today since the future is really great for the kids present today than the ones we had..i had seen computers only when i was 10 and started to use them only when i was 12 and cellphones were part of my life only when i was 16 but todays kids have a different life they get hold of a computer and cellphones in around three or four years old itself...so i think that growing old is reallty not a blessing for me.....

there is not much difference before and now. i think that it depends mostly on the person and the lifestyle that he has. cause some old folks now i see are healthy in their very old age. and some are not. and before i saw good healthy elderly and some were not too. so i guess it will depend on many factors. but though i think it will be harder to be healthy if you have less money cause every thing is expensive and hard to be some healthy foods. cause now we buy every thing. well before you can still buy market products much cheaper than now. and much healthier too. but i am really doing or making an extra effort to live a healthy lifestyle. i have failed a million times to do it though i have learned the secret of healthy. i have fallen to the sideways many times after some effort to walk on the straight path of healthy living.

That is the spirit. Why should fret the old age as it would strike at all when reach that milestone. Better accept the truth and enjoy the time. For who has stopped aging and who has pulled back the swift footed Time? None. So my good wishes to your grands.

I think for the most part we can say yes. We've had incredible advancements in medicine and quality of life. We also have more leisure time then we once did. I also think that certain changes in perceptions also allow us to live longer. As we learn now to carry stress, etc we free the body of such things and become healthier. Namaste-Anora

Wow! your grandparents are doing something right! That's wonderful that they are in such good shape! I think people do stay healthy longer. I don't know why it is . At first I thought maybe because of the new medical technology , but I'm not sure. You see alot of people who can't afford it these days and they still seem healthier and live longer without it

They are living longer so it must be true that they are healthier. The concept of middle age is changing once again as more and more people are living to be well past one hundred years old.
