While surfing today, I came across this article about a guy who lost a finger in a motorcycle accident and had a USB drive installed in his prosthetic fingerYou can check the article here with pictures. http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/10/usb-finger-drive-concept-attempts-to-keep-up-with-reality/ This could be the start of the Bionic man! What do you think of this? Would you do something this wacky?Or is it just a step too far?

I would totally do this. I mean, first off, think of the practical application: you would never lose your flash drive, and it would never get stolen. Plus, don't tell me it wouldn't be AWESOME to just walk into a coffee and plug your finger into your laptop. I wonder, though...it must be very durable, like it must be waterproof, and also very tough. I might be wary about keeping my personal files on something that will be helping me eat my lunch...

That is very true it would be something that you would never lose. Although the downside is being plugged into a computer all day

It would also mean that you could only type with the one hand when using it!

Ha! That is true, I guess I hadn't thought about that. And I guess that would give a totally new meaning to someone having a virus. :D (Bad joke...)

Yes it is a little strange but I am sure he had a reason for it and is happy with his USB finger.

This has to be the most bizarre thing that I have come across in a very long while. It would certainly be novel and convenient at times, but I shall be happy with my USB drive worn around my neck.

Yes I did not believe it at first untill I seen all the pictures of it. I too would stick to wearing the USB drive around my neck or on a key chain.

I think it is great, life gave him a lemon and he made lemonade. I love it, I think it is inventive and creative and the odds are he won't forget that drive too often. And I keep mine on my key ring.

Yep that is very true and you are right it is something he will not forget to bring with him. Like just how many times have we lost our keys?

It actually just fits over his finger like a prosthetic. It's not really implanted into his finger or anything. So he's not really like a bionic man. He can remove it. It is really weird though!

Yes it is a prosthetic otherwise he would have to sit there with his finger plugged into the USB port which would be very inconvenient. It was just one of the weird and wacky things I came across surfing the web

That seems like a really convenient accessory. If I were to lose a finger, then why not put something usable in it? A prosthetic finger would be much help except for an attempt to look normal. I would probably do something like that and I don't really see it as wacky... I wouldn't mind having a digital ID embedded on my skin and I think I'd gladly volunteer for such an experiment given that they can assure me that it can be upgraded when better technology arrives :) Thanks for the response on my discussion!

there's actually already a research on it and they have a whole family for a test subject. Their whole house is controlled digitally and they don't need keys because their doors and gates detect the digital id of the owner - they're embedded on the arms of the family members. :D I wouldn't mind being a part of that test!

I am not sure if I would like to be a test subject of RF id chips but I do applaud you for wanting to do it. Maybe it is the future to have no keys and control everything around us electronically

Fair play to you oyenka. You are so much open to new ideas and technology than I am. When I think of it you are right the prosthetic finger drive is kind of practical. I just don't know if I would go for the id chip implant as yet. I just have read so many negative uses for this technology.

It's a prosthetic, so why the heck not! At least he was smart enough to make it interchangeable to support upgrades because the existing one is only 2GB and that's pretty small by current standards. I wouldn't do anything like this myself though. If I ended up needing a prosthetic digit, I'd go for a Swiss Army Knife kind of set-up. lol.

32 GB flash drives are pretty common now and I think they go even higher. (Not that I've seen a higher memory one yet) Same size all round too. It's pretty impressive actually. I wonder how long it'll be before they design a flash drive for a John Thomas? lol.

I don't know how I'd feel, but I like to think that I would be willing to try something new. I've never lost a limb and I understand that it's a very emotional thing as well as physical.

That is a good attitude to have "willing to try something new", I suppose if we did not try new things or welcome new technology, life would be rather dull. I never lost a limb or really know of anyone that has, I would agree with you it would be very emotional experience.
