Your solution to the name game

Alright, I'm not going to ask anyone to give me the names of their children if they aren't comfortable with it. I do, but that is only because I don't think that first names is going to give away all that much. Anyhow. Well, the question today is. What made you name your children the names that you did? I know that there are a lot of names that are 'dated' and there are a lot of names that are 'culteral' and things like that. But, one thing I love about the current times is that really anything goes when it comes to naming your children. So, I'll start with my children and why I named them what I did. Clara was named after my great grandma. When I was a little girl my 'grandmama' when through a depression phase right before she died and I heard her crying that no one would name their children after her because she wasn't a good enough of a grandma. I was hurt to see her like that and decided that I would name a little girl after her when I grew up. I didn't even know what her name was then. Every one called her 'June' because that was her middle name and all her daughters had J names so... Haha. Anyhow. I when I found out her name was Clara I really did like it. Patsy was named after her grandma on her dad's side. When Mark and I had first got together he told me about his mom dying and how it still hurt so bad because he really was a 'mamas boy.' Anyhow, after I found out I was pregnant he and I were discussing names and he was comming up when some bad ones. Haha. I stopped him and said 'If it's a girl, her name will be Patsy.' He got misty eyed with me and said that would be the best gift he could give to the memory of his mom. So, no, my daughter was not named after Patsy Cline. Haha. But, I think her grandma was. Marcus was going to be Lucus. Haha. I've always loved that name and it sort of matched his father's name. Mark had already had a son that was a junior, but he had been a stillborn. Mark and I had gone in circles about what to name a boy. He liked Lucus, but he was also a fan of several other names that I just did not like at all. Meanwhile his exwife was hedging in her 2 cents every chance she could. Reminding me that she had him first, showing me pictures of their son, and making my life misrible. I had to put up with her because she had a child while married to Mark by another man, but their had been no paternity test to prove it, so Mark was the one stuck with child support and he was okay with that as long as he got to visit the little girl. Anyhow I woke up one day and I realized that Mark and I were arguing about the name because I wanted my son to be named after his father! And I felt that my place with him was nothing because of the way this woman was acting. So, I finally put my foot down. When Mark came by the hospital after I had Marcus he sat down and asked what I had finally decided on for our son's name. I showed him the papers and he laughed. He called me a 'sh*t desturber' but I know that he is glad that I name Marcus as I did because he is always going on and on about being a 'sr.' now. Haha. So, what's your stories?

My children are all grown and their last names are different from mine so I have no problem posting them. My first born was a boy and my husband wanted to name him after him so that's how he got his name. The next three were girls and it just so happened that I had three favorite girl names, which I had loved for years...Jennifer, Melissa and Amanda. So, I named my oldest daughter Jennifer and her middle name is my father's name and her father's mother's middle name, Lee. My sescond daughter, Melissa's middle name is a combination of my mother's name and my middle name, deanne. My youngest daughter, Amanda's middle name is my ex's mother's name, Lucille. He wanted that to be her first name but I resisted and she thanks me often for not sticking her with that name. Instead of now being Mandee, she would be Lucy.

One of my sisters was married to a man named Lark, which is the most unusual name I've come across in my life. They had a son and named him after his father so there are now two Larks running around! My nephew played hockey in high school and on two leagues. He was so good and at one time planned to go to college and try to make it to the Pros. I thought he had a great name for a professional hockey player but he decided to follow another dream instead so no Campbells soup commercials for my sis!

We named my oldest son Memphis, my husbands fav movie at the time happened to be gone in 60 seconds and Nick cage's nick name is Memphis, and since I am not a traditional kind of girl I thought that would be a great name. His middle name is neil, which is my husbands fathers name, as well as my husbands middle name so we carried on the tradtion with that. Which I was not too fond of because his initials are MNM...lol. My youngest son was a problem because we could not agree on any names, he wanted to name him Marshal, which I freaking hated with a passion and I didnt want another M name. So we agreed on Ryder, there is no special reason for it, I just happened to like it and thought Memphis and Ryder sounded nice together. His middle name is James, and again I picked it only because I thought the names sounded nice together. I loved them because they are not common names, you hear the name ryder once in a while but you never hear Memphis.

Thats funny because I knew this guy i used to work with when i was younger. When I got pregnant we were talking on msn one night and I told him that I was going to name the baby memphis if it were a boy. And then when I got pregnant with Ryder, I told him as well. My mom was talking to one of her friends a couple months ago and she had mentioned her grandchildren, so her friend asked what their names were and my mom said memphis and ryder, turns out she had a friend who named their kids the same names!!! Both were younger than mine so I asked her to find out the fathers name, sure enough, it was the same guy I used to work with!!! I am still to this day really annoyed with it, its not right to bite on other peoples names!!! I mean I know we all get the names from somewhere but you should never copy a friends name, especially both of them!!! LOL. So I know how you feel about Claras name being yours!!!

I totally love your children's names! Those are so adorable! My best friend has 2 little boys name Rylee and River. People teased her at first for her first son's name because it was still be used as a girl's name. But, now others are choosing to name their sons Rylee now too. And, it's mostly little kids that think she is weird for naming her youngest River. Haha. I think they are totally cute names. I really like the names that NO ONE else is doing right now. And, to tell you the truth I will a little put off when my brother told me his boss liked Clara's name so much they wanted to copy it! That's my thing! Haha. Nah, I don't mind if other's want to use it, as long as I'm the first for my generation to use it. Haha.

Our first born is Hannah. We had a difficult time picking a name and couldn't agree on anything. I mentioned the name Nora and my husband agreed just to be done talking about names. While going through a baby name book I mentioned Hannah. I didn't really like it at the time, but my husband's eyes lit up and he said, "I love it! I'll call her Hannah Banana!" It wasn't so much what he said as much as how he said it and the look in his eyes. Ironically we've always called her Hannah Bean instead of Hannah Banana! Her middle name is the same as my middle name. Next came Emma. My husband always thought it sounded like an old lady's name, which I thought was weird since Hannah seems like an old lady's name to me! I loved the name and he finally agreed. We had several middle names picked out and the night before she was born I put them all in a hat and pulled one out! Third was Benjamin James. Benjamin is my husband's name and James we both just liked. Since my husband goes by Ben we decided that Benjamin would always be referred to his full name. It's been hard to convince others to call him Benjamin instead of Ben, but we're getting there. Actually he goes by Chubba more than anything else and if you ask him his name he'll say, Chubba James! #4 is Gabriel (Gabe) which is a name my hubs always liked and finally got me to agree to! He wanted his middle name to be Rayne, but I HATED this and finally convinced him not too. We ended up using my maiden name as a middle name and when we told my parents they both cried ... they didn't have any sons and this is the only way the name will be passed on! BTW, I love the name Clara! So beautiful! I also love the way all of your kids have meaningful names and not something just pulled out of thin air ... or a hat! ;)

LoL, thanks for your response and kind words about my children's names. I love your children's names as well. I find it very cute that your son says his name is 'Chubba' Haha. Since there were 7 children in my family growing up. My brother and I each had responsibility of one of the youngest 2. My brother called Holmes 'Buddy' and 'Butter' for some reason and the name stuck! We still sometimes slip and call him 'Buddy'! Anne was my charge and she couldn't really say my name well. So she called me 'Meme' since she was the youngest she was a little on the spoiled side and we had read a book about a spoiled little girl named 'Pookins' so we kept calling her that. Well, Anne didn't like to be called 'Pookins' but she was okay with me calling her that since we were pretty close. Well, if anyone else slipped and called her 'Pookins' she would get very defiant and say 'NO, Meme call me Pookins!' Haha. She is 14 now and I will call her that every once in a while to relive old times. Hehe. To this day I'm the only one that can get away with it too!

A little too messy this thing for me. I have read it twice and eveytime, when I reached to the bottom. I forgot what was your grandma's name and what was your hubby's grandma's name. Uff, I think I don't have patience, so, I will only talk about the Name "Clara". It was sad that no son cared to give her name to her grandchildren and it was nice that you decided to have it for your children.

May be my English isn't that good to understand things easily. I am going to copy this content and would ask one of my friends about it. She is a perfectionist in English!

I remember asking my mother how did she come up with my name. She said it was not hard at all, as me and my cousin, were both name after our grandmother (my mother's mother). But then when my sister was born, she was under real stress regarding what name should she be given. So, she took the big , fat, heavy phone book, and started to go over all the names, one by one.She spent few hours a day for some days, till she finally came up with the name. And everyone agreed that's awesome. I'm not going to tell our names, because they have superstitions...yes, even in this amazing technology time, but still, if you're looking for names, at least the phone book is a great idea.

Thats cool! Who needs a baby name book! Haha. My best friend bought a baby name book from xmart. We poured over names for her to use in one night and she returned it to the store the next day. Haha. But, with a phone book you don't need to spend a dime! Anyone for Maud?

Well I have 2 boys.. My oldest is named Vincent Patrick.. Vincent is my fathers name and Patrick is my hubbys name. We were going to name him Patrick Vincent. But we felt that having 2 Patrick in the house could get to confusing for us. My youngest name is Joseph Ryan. He was suppose to be named Ryan.. But while I was pregnant my father in law passed away. His first name is Patrick(same as my husbands) which we already knew we didnt want to name him that so we took My father in laws middle name Joseph. Ryan is just the name we wanted to name him/.

Names have a way of changing on us during the pregnancy! Haha. One of my sisters was going to be a Clara (but my dad didn't remember their was a Clara in the family and refused to use a name that wasn't in the family) then she was a Caroline and then she finally ended up with Karra... which is so friggin close sounding to Clara that we have a time with calling the right person! Karra is a variation of my Mom's name 'Karri' and my mom and her twin sister must have made a packed when they were young because her sister named her daughter after my mom and I'm named after her sister! Now, if you think that is confusing, wait! My brothers are all named after my dad! Haha. We have 'Robert Michael', 'Michael Robert', 'Trenton Robert Michael', and 'Holmes Robert Michael'! Haha. The trick with the last 2 boys names is that they are both variations on our last name. I know. Odd. But, I like my younger brothers unique names and I have noticed a lot of 'Trentons' popping up in my daughter's class so somewhere along the way, the name caught on!
