Sound familiar?

A country which finds itself on the verge of total economic collapse, with astronomical unemployment rates, a major health care crisis, a damaged infrastructor, and people losing their homes and jobs seemingly en masse as a result of all this and factors that seem utterly out of their control. A country that has been attacked by enemies that hate it. Enemies that hate everything about it--its language, its clothes, its food, its equality of people and sexes, and its religion. Enemies that want us to go to hell so they can be in paradise, and who will stop at nothing to undermine our way of life in every imaginable way. A country whose leaders are brave enough and strong enough to do whatever it takes to root out the enemy; checking in on phone calls, conversations, and the places where those associated with the enemies' religion live and worship, plotting our destruction; always on the lookout for suspicious activity, terrorism, and threats to national security. The only way we can get rid of this enemy is to wipe these terrorists from the face of the earth. Everything about them is evil and vile and opposed to everything good and decent about our lives, our country, and our god. Only by killing them all can we ever hope to restore our country to its former glory, and return to a time before the economy went bad; before health care issues and unemployment rates shot up; before we lost our lives to an all out attack. We must go to war against them to the end; its the only hope--the very safety of the world is at stake, because they are just as affected by all this as we are, and if they aren't with us, then they must be with our enemies. Sound familiar? It should, and not because I'm talking about the present day. I'm talking about pre-Nazi Germany when a man named Adolf Hitler first came into power. He used the socio-economic state of Germany after losing World War I to gain sympathy from the German people, and then singled out the Jewish people as a scapegoat. In this way, Hitler justified the creation of the Gestapo, the SS, the Nazi occupation, and the Holocaust. Thousands of innocent men, women, and children were ruthlessly slaughtered in the name of these lies as the Nazis strove for all out genocide. It is truly frightening what people can allow themselves to believe and justify in the name of god and country, and Nazi Germany is one of the most powerful and important examples in recent history. And we should all know what they say about that--"Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it."

I really found your post appropriate. I just witnessed this very attitude tonight in several areas and it's scary that this mentality exists today. I have to say that tonight was the first time I'd really been this frightened over this mentality. It seems that we're in such a fragile state right now that there are people who would buy into this mentality thinking it is their only way out, or that it's justified. I want to believe that people are better than this, and that it won't occur again, but because it happened once there is that remote possibility it could occur again. People who lived through the Holocaust are dying out, there are movements trying to erase it from the history books, and this is something we can't let occur. We must continue to teach the holocaust literature and never forget those innocents. We must also never allow ourselves to find a scapegoat and blame them. I recall when 911 occured and I was teaching in Arizona we had two shop owners killed simply because they were middle eastern. I recall the knot in my stomach when I suddenly feared for my middle eastern students, and had students asking me "Will they create camps like they did to the Japanese". I hope we never forget and never repeat. Namaste-Anora

I hope and pray that people everywhere every day will choose to give sway to Love in all ways, always. If we will allow all of our actions to be guided by love, someday there will be no more need for fear, or hatred, or war. Namaste.

Pretty interesting comparison of the present and the past. Well so far I am not seeing that it is repeating itself totally towards that direction. So far I see a nation is indeed struggling but the measure they are taking up is not towards anyone else right now and I am seeing that the country inflicted from this problem is doing their best to recover without resorting to making war. I see them as making amends with the country they are in conflict without really using weapons and I hope it remains that way. Although I found your post pretty good as a reminder for everyone that we should be aware of what had happened and might happen today. I am not saying that it will not happen but awareness is a necessary thing for us to learn past mistakes and never do it again in our present times.

I hope that you are correct, and that we will be mindful of the mistakes of the past so that we do not repeat them. As a Buddhist saying goes, "Hatred is never ended by hatred; by love alone it is healed. This is an ancient and eternal law." Liber AL vel Legis affirms this with the passage, "There is no bond that can unite the divided but love." Let us hope that love wins out. Namaste.
