The conficker worm currently has 3 or 4 different viruses. So you can actually get different versions of the same worm. If your have a good anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-malware, or something of the sort your computer will notify you as soon as it is downloaded onto your computer. Most software programs designed to detect any virus will also have a tool to remove the virus. If all else fails contact a local small business computer repair company. They can remove the virus and update your anti virus software. DO NOT take your computer to a large chain computer repair store like Best Buy's Geek Squad. You wont get your computer back within 5 business days and they wont actually tell you what is wrong or where the virus is located. You will also pay 3-5 times more by going to large repair companies then you would going to a local small business.

Conficker is just another virus. It sits there, looking at a bunch of websites, waiting to be activated as part of a botnet. If you're on Windows and get the auto-updates, you're pretty much safe. The virus is still inactive at the moment: all it does is spread itself around. Detection and removal are simple enough: http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2008-112203-2408-99&tabid=3
