I am taking a feminist class, and I came across this article that is a huge eye opener, scary, and makes me very angry! Here is an excerpt from the article, but I have also provided a link to read the rest of the story. "KABUL – A new Afghan law makes it legal for men to rape their wives, human rights groups and some Afghan lawmakers said Thursday, accusing President Hamid Karzai of signing the legislation to bolster his re-election prospects. Critics worry the legislation undermines hard-won rights for women enacted after the fall of the Taliban's strict Islamist regime." http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090402/ap_on_re_as/as_afghan_women

I am so against the way in which women are being treated in Islam. In Iran they even hanged a girl because she was flirting...can you believe that. You know what makes me wonder is what would a nice girl like you do in a feminist class?

LOL! I just call it my feminist class. Its called women's studies, and it is a requirement. I wasn't happy about taking the class, but I am learning a thing or to. And, I have also learned that the word "feminism" has a very negative connotation, and really isnt a bad idea, I think most people believe in equal rights (which is the basis of feminism) ~Thanks for the response! I had no idea about the hanging!

Well the situation is same wherever patriarchy rules and women have few or no rights for themselves. Fear is the greatest factor that keep people mum and let’s accept the fact that most men just love it to have women under their thumb and doing their every bidding. It starts right from childhood where girls and boys are treated differently by the parents and family. Its really imprinted in their mind thru their growing years that women are properties of men and laws are passed to give it a legal sanctity. Even without such laws, there would be very little difference really coz religion endorses such treatment of women…all religions state women as properties of men. The difference is that some nations and societies have looked beyond their religion while other nations and societies regard religion as the ultimate truth in their lives

THere was an article in our paper recently that talked of the "morality police" in Israel of all places, which has been fairly modernized fo years. They were going into houses and dragging out women and beating them in the street for such infractions as wearing a skirt that showed their ankles or cutting their hair! I hope you know that the Taliban is still alive and well. They just aren't as open as they were pre 9/11 because many of them are afraid of being caught and imprisoned.
