What size is a Cup

April 6, 2009 3:37am CST
I often see American recipes that say add a cup of something or other. In England we do not have cup as a measure. Our cups, I presume they mean the same as we have our tea and coffee in vary a great deal. So can anyone tell me what size cup they mean in recipes please?

Way back before one could buy measuring cups and soforth cooks used tea cups to measure the ingredients with. Today the standard measurement for the United States cup of dry ingredients is 8 oz., 1/2 pound, or 225 grams. For liquid ingredients it is 8 fluid oz, 1/2 pint or 237 mi. Most of our measuring cup now have the grams and ml. on them too. for more details go to http://whatscookingamerica.net/Q-A/BritishEquiv.htm
