Fire! Sort of...

I had to work late last night, so my husband picked up our daughter from the babysitter's house and went home to start dinner. He was going to make some chicken strips for us to go with some mashed potatoes I think. Anyway, he pulls a pot and a casserole dish out of the oven, starts the oven and puts the chicken strips in. I get home about 10 minutes later. He asks me to go check on the chicken which I do. I walked into the kitchen and opened the oven door and was greeted by a thick cloud of acrid black smoke. My oven was on fire! I slam the door shut, turn the oven off, grab a spaghetti pot that was dirty in the sink and fill it with water and in one motion, open the oven door, throw the water on the flaming whatever it was and then slam the door shut. By this time, our smoke alarms are going off and my daughter is screaming. My husband comes running downstairs as I am standing in the kitchen, covered in soot with this bewildered expression on my face. My husband forgot to remove a plastic bowl from the oven. It was in the far back corner of the oven. It melted and caught fire. Our oven is probably ruined due to the water I threw on it. Our chicken strips were destroyed. My daughter wouldn't quit crying for an hour. Our cats hid upstairs in the bathroom. Our dog got in the bathtub (her safe haven) because she was scared. Note to all -- don't store anything in the oven! So, have you ever done something like this? Were you able to put the fire out?

I had this happen once. My mom had made a frozen pizza the night before. Those kind that come on the cardboard boxed circle. Anyways she put it in the oven after we ate and forget to put it up later that night. Next day I went to preheat the oven without checking. Next thing i know I smelled something like fire. I opened the oven to the cardboard with pizza on top just started to smoke up. Luckily it wasn't as bad as what you just discribed.
