Have you ever participated in a reading group or club?

Have you ever been a part of a reading group? If so, what was your experience like? I have never been a part of one. I love reading and I think it could be a nice way to meet new people who obviously would have atleast one thing in common with me (reading). I'm not overly social/outgoing, but it seems like it might be a nice way to socialize with new people.

I have always wanted to join one. I just found one down the street but havne't gone to any of the meetings. I hear it's a lot of fun and you learn a lot about what the author is saying by hearing other peoples thoughts on the book

It probably would be fun and interesting to see how others react and think of certain parts of the books, storylines and characters.

I have not participated in one, but I do think I would enjoy it. You're right it would be a great way to meet people that you have something in common with. Are you going to try it?

I'm not sure if I will try one. My shyness is winning out right now, but maybe int he future.

Our local library has a book club but the guy that runs it is really crabby and doesn't like me at all. They meet once a month to review a book but that only lasts about ten minutes, the rest of the time they are gabbing and gossiping so its not really my scene. There are a couple of independent ones at smaller bookstores that are a lot more fun and pick way better books. I actually got them turned on to Darren Shan and the Cirque Du Freak series. Imagine 40 - 60 year old women reading teen fiction and loving it! It can be a nice way to meet new people but you may have to try a few different clubs or places to find one that you feel comfortable with.

That sucks about the guy being crabby and not really liking you. I wouldn't like it either if it was primarily people just getting together to gossip, that would really annoy me...so yeah I'd probably have to try a couple to find a good fit. It would be pretty interesting to hear 40-60 yr olds discussing some teen lit. I'm sure they would have some different reactions to certain things than if you were dicsussing it with younger people.

I've tried to participate in a few informal ones but those tend to fizzle out as people get busy with other things. I think the more formal, bigger groups can be a good way to discover books you might not otherwise take a second look at as well as a way to meet people with similar interests and outlooks. I hate to say this, but I have to admit that these days I'm more interested in reading than socializing so I'd be in the club mainly for the book recommendations! I probably wouldn't be a very popular member.
