I got a female German Shepard and when ever i would take her out to walk she would take leash in her mouth and would try to jerk it out of my hand or would play with it. It makes me feel like she is trying to tell everyone that she is walking me and not i am the one who is walking her.. Is it common with dogs or my dog is only one dong it. I dont mind her doing this but just want to know if it is common with dogs and do they have to be trained not to do this or is it my dog only?

First of all, this is not the dog telling you she is boss but only her rebelling or testing your authority, my youngest dog did this and there are two approaches to take. The first is to say 'no' firmly and loudly, the second is to immediately reverse the direction of your walking, thus forcing the dog to pay attention to you. all the best urban

I agree immediate reverse of direction (without pulling on the leash) is a good way to learn your dog how to heel and approach it in another way. Pulling on the leash will only insinuate that you want to play aswell and therefor she won't stop.

thanks urban dekay for thr response, it is not that she is showing who is boss, she is quite a docile dog but she is playful and she would keep trying to play with leash.

Your dog is happy and cheerful that she is going for a walk. She is excited and wants to play. Both our dogs tend to do this when they are happy and walking. Usually leaving the dog park when the leash goes back on. We just tell them no and they cease holding the leash in their mouth. No tugging as we don't want to promote potential play. It may not be common with all dogs but a lot of dogs do it. It is up to us, as their handler to teach the dog the word no so that when they do this, they understand when you say no. Sure you have to train them not to do it by simply training them to the word no in other circumstances so that when they do go for the leash, you can say no in a firm but not yelling voice and then the dog will understand what you are saying. This works with my dog, every time. She is in training as she is still young. She loves to play with her leash but I have never allowed her to or promoted it in any way since I have owned her. Pulling gently to have the dog let go is not recommended as the dog may get the message that it is tug-a-war playtime. Then when you do not proceed it may confuse the dog and it wont understand your commands to have the dog cease taking the leash in it's mouth. Find a way to get the dogs attention when they attempt to do this. They may likely drop the leash. Additionally, teaching your dog the drop it command could be useful in this circumstance as well. I taught my dog drop it while playing with certian toys in doors. Hope this helps.

You are most welcome for the response. However it is common for some dogs but it is not recommended to encourage this behavior. Try to not allow your dog to do this.

some dogs do that, some grow out of it and some have to be trained not to do it.

If you want to break her of biting on the leash, rub a bit of Tabasco Sauce on the leash before you take her out. She will never bite on it again because the pepper sauce will burn her tongue. This is the best way of teaching her how to behave.

No, that will just make her choose some other form of rebellion all the best urban

I don't agree with that at all. The only thing that hot sauce will do to the dog is hurt it. There are many other ways to train her not to tug on the leash.

You have to teach her the limits and what NO is.

Thanks beautiful..i would just try do that.

My dog used to do exactly that; it's just a playful action. My dogs seven now and she grew out of it quite fast just give it time, if it starts to bother you simply take it off her. Resist the temptation to give it her back and distract her with something else for a while. I dont think its control, i think its your dog being playful with you. She'll grow out of it.

You read that dog right, she is telling all that she is the leader of the pack. Not good, don't allow her to do that, when you put on the leash you are in charge and walking or whatever else you have in mind is the order of business. Never play at taking it away from her or try to sweet talk her, just make sure you are in control and be gently forceful. Blessings

thanks savypat for the response and though she loves to play with her leash is one reason i can think of. She is quite docile dog and never show the leader of pack kind of attitude. but sometimes not always i want her to not play with her lease.

Your dog is still a puppy, and until she gets used to being on a leash all the time she is going to do this. My dog does this, I don't put her on a leash very often so every time that I do she pulls and tugs. I think that a dog just wants to get off of it so they can go where they want to. Just give her time she'll stop this one day when she finally understands that she can't get off the lease until you take your off of it.

All four of my dogs do the same thing. If the leash is on one of them and I am not holding the other end, the others will run up and grab it. It's so funny to see my dogs walking each other. I don't think that it's a control issue, I just think that they view it as a game. Most dogs' favorite game is tug-of-war.
